Hey vikings2010 - I already have a post on this subject somewhere in these forums... I am sure you will get other feedback, from what I can gather... it will be somewhat similar of a situation as in Atlanta.

Gore, like SIngletary has said, is still their back, and having Westbrook won't change that.

I am guessing Westbrook will be spelling Gore on some 3rd downs (like Norwood does for Turner), however if Gore goes down with injury, then Dixon will become the starter (like Snelling would in Atlanta).

Westbrook is being paid $1.25 million, but with his concussions and age, I can't see him being a huge threat to Gore.

If anything, it RAISES Gore's value... as there is less chance Gore will miss anytime (with less of a workload) - Gore has an awesome fantasy playoff schedule.... so if anything, I see it as a positive thing that Westbrook is in town.

It's almost like, would you rather have Gore for 13-14 games averaging 23-25 carries, or have Gore for all 16 games averaging 18-20?

My two cents are that they are paying for Westbrook and paying a load. Both Gore and Westy are injury prone so my guess, Singletary will opt to use both fairly frequently. Maybe a 60/40 split with the majority going to Gore.

But, we ALL are guessing what is in the mind of Singletary. IIt'll be interesting to see how it all plays out though. At least now I can hold onto Westbrook in hopes he gets the starting gig when Gore plays his maximum 14 games.

Are you kidding? 60/40 split? I hope you're joking. Singletary has already said that Gore is their RB and nothing is going to change. There's NO way it's a 60/40. EVERY expert site still has Gore as #5 or 6 RB and Westbrook won't change that. Westbrook will hurt Gore just as much as McGahee will hurt Rice - not very much.

Here's the question now- Would you rather have Gore or somebody like SJax or D. Williams, moreso SJax?

Here's the thing - no one has yet seen how Singletary wants HIS team to run. After a year and a half of running the show there is no doubt this is now his team. And I'd say the best bet to seeing how he's going to do it would be his 1980s Bears teams: they were smash mouth football with Payton running down your throat but they were NEVER afraid to stretch the field with McKinnon and Gault. That helped create the running lanes. He's got Crabtree (already probably better than either Gault or McKinnon were), Morgan and Ginn. Davis is a better TE from those teams.Expect his special teams to kick ass. And yeah, expect Gore to get a clear majority of the touches, with Westbrook as insurance more or less.

They're going to look rather conventional and I don't expect an RB committee to develop. Ball control, not afraid to pass deep and Defenses that hurt you will be the crux of his game calling in SF. He is going to run a simple formula. They're simply going to win and win often this year.

Even if Gore goes down with injury, Dixon is most likely to become the new starter, with Westbrook remaining as the 3rd down back... regardless of if Gore is healthy, or not, I do not see Westbrook being more than a Kevin Faulk-esque type player this year.

It is Gores spot. I don't think that's even in question. Westbrook is a playoff assurance. A 60/40 split doesn't say otherwise. Gore is an intense runner, but parts of him are made of glass. He's had only 1 complete season in the last 5 seasons. If Singletary wants a solid back during the playoffs 9and they will make the playoffs) they need to play Gore a tad more conservatively. I'm not saying Gore won't get good numbers. I am saying that they will utilize a beast like Westbrook though. Having 2 stud backs will take ALLOT of pressure off of Smith (I'm also thinking Davis has his best year).

It's just speculation on my part, of course, but I tend to look outside the box on moves like this. There was a plan in making this deal. Dixon is a solid back but he's a rookie and they want to win and win now and Westy give them the best opportunity at this moment.

A 2.5 million dollar 3rd down back?

I agree, I guess the point that am making is that in terms of fantasy, Dixon is probably the better handcuff to Gore than Westbrook. If you plan to start Westbrook, then get him, but if you plan to leave one RB on your bench as a handcuff to Gore, I'd go with Dixon.

It's not $2.5 million, I believe it's $1.5, and it's not a 3rd down back, it's like everyone else is saying, it's a $1.5 million dollar INSURANCE policy... if Gore goes down, all they would have is Dixon... if Gore goes down now, they have Westbrook AND Dixon.

Personally, the only reason I'm in this discussion and evaluating it is because my LLD league, I got Westy as part of a deal. He'll reside on my bench until Gore gets injured and I would probably not take either Westy or Dixon unless they were available in rounds 13, 14 or even 15.

Great post IMO. Singletary is a smash mouth bred player and coach. Gore benefited off of this last year, relative to the Mike Martz scheme, and the additions to the offensive line in the off-season are fairly telling (even thought Gore still kicked butt with a mediocre group of run blockers). Concerns about Gore being available for a full 17 games are valid, I'm not so sure about an out-of-work 31 year old RB getting signed on as depth getting 40% of the carries.

We are talking about the same Westbrook who has had trouble getting on and staying on the field himself, right. The same RB who has was a FA until August and only got a contract because Coffee wanted to serve a higher calling and now he will get 40% of the touches in SF. Please send me the name of your supplier, he must have some good stuff.

It's 1.25 million guaranteed and 1.25 million in incentives = 2.5 million dollar contract..

49ers sign Brian Westbrook

LMGTFY

A league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Westbrook's deal is worth $1.25 million guaranteed, with $1.25 million worth of incentives.

There were several offers to Westbrook out there. St. Louis, Denver and Washington. St. Lious, no chance for a playoff. Denver, no chance of a playoff. Washinton, a chance but slim and a RBBC that puts RBBC's to shame.

And yes, Westy is an injury waiting to happen, but so is Gore.

BTW, did everyone pay no attention to my comment where I said "I would take neither Dixon or Westbrook" as a handcuff because their numbers will pretty much suck?

I was shocked when they signed Westbrook since they have Gore and Coffee. Westbrook fit better elsewhere, yet, was still not signed. I see SF having huge aspirations for the year and want to be covered in case of injuries to both Gore and Coffee.

They don't have Coffee, he abruptly quit and almost everyone sees this signing as Westbrook taking on a short term backup role.

I see Westbrook going into the games between the 40s just like Coffee did last year. In the 3rd quarter Westbrook could go in more than a 3rd down back, but in the 4th its always Frank that closes it out because as the game goes on his runs up the middle just get better.

Westbrook gives them an option around the tackles. Last year the 9ers were first in runs up the middle, but dead last on the outsides. I think Westbrook could give them that outside sweep that the 9ers have been reluctant to run.
