Am I nuts for thinking about this strategy?

12 team league, performance scoring, 1 PPR (1.5 for TE), start 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB or WR or TE).

I have the 4th pick and assume I'll be grabbing whichever is left of AP, CJ, MJD, Rice so that gives me a top RB already, great. Now here is what I am considering at the 2.09 and 3.04, TE and TE. I'm not a huge fan of the WR's that are typically left here and won't be grabbing a QB yet and the RB's here are not all that much more solid then say what's around later on considering I already have a top one.

With 1.5 ppr for TE's, would starting Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates be a possible smart decision or am I going out on a limb too much? Anyone ever try this themselves or have seen it play out?

I have done that before with success... although, you could do that in rounds 3 and 4 (getting two of the top 4 or 5 TE's), I'm sure, and pick up somebody stellar in rd. 2, like one of the top 9 WR's who might be left, or one of the top 3 QB's....

you have the 21st pick overall (2.09)? I'd say, assuming the 1st 20 picks are 10 Rbs, 2 QBs, 8 WRs, that you still should be able to get a high tier 2 WR (Marshall, White, Jennings, Colston, etc), which is a hell of a lot better than what wuld be left for you in the 4th or 5th round.

I think your thoughts on what RBs will be left is dead-on...very little difference in my mind between the 10th and 20th best RBs...they all have their upside, and all have risk. Let someone else pick who they want to gamble on, take the best player on the board at that spot, and then draft whoever is left in round 4.

I'd be happy going WR in the 2nd, then grab whoever is left of Davis/Clark/Gates/Witten in the 3rd.

Would you actually consider playing a TE at your flex over someone like say, Joseph Addai? Or jacobs?? who you could grab as your #3 in the 6th or 7th round if you take someone like Jstew/beannie Wells as your #2 in round 4.....

Especially when its 1.5 PPR for TE's.

1.5 for TEs completely changes a draft. I did a draft in that format already this year. Dallas Clark and Gates are usually gone by the end of the first round or soon thereafter. The people in the best position to do that strategy are near the end of the first round because the "big boys" won't make it until the 3rd round. They fly off the board fast and furious in most cases because the top guys score on par top performers at the other positions. Interesting strategy, but you would be lucky to get one of those guys. Therefore, may not be the best strategy from where you are drafting unless you get really really lucky. I woudln't count on it.

I am in a league with extra PPR for TE's, and yes, the start 2 strategy will wok great, IF you go after them early. You should be able to get a stud with your second pick, and in the third, it can be a crapshoot. They won't last long, unless a guy like Shiancoe drops.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I had the draft last night and I did get 2 TE's early but not in the 2nd and 3rd round. Here is how the first 5 rounds went for me:

1.04 - MJD

2.09 - Roddy White

3.04 - Gates

4.09 - Rivers

5.04 - Vernon Davis

So it looks like I'll be starting Gates and Davis with 1.5 ppr.

I think you did well there

I did something similar in a 2 keeper league this year. This league is PPR but TE's get double yardage. (When you keep a player you lose your draft pick in the same round you got that player in the previous year)

So, I kept S Smith NYG for my 9th and V Davis for my 10th. At 1.11 I took Gates, and was shocked to see Turner still there at 2.02. Double yardage probably makes TE's even more valuable than your 1.5PPR scoring.

+1, though I'd like to see who your RB2 and WR2 are, since they are basically the postions you neglected in order to go TE1 & TE2.

For RB's I can start 1 of Jacobs, LT or Thomas Jones and at WR I have Harvin or Mason. So obviously not great but if Gates and Davis step up then I only need 1 from each to plug in.

I have a similar league. PPR with TEs getting 1point for every 7 yards instead of every 10. We start 3 receivers and they can be either WR or TE.

M y draft went like this out of the 6 slot:

Gore

Gates

Finley

Moreno

Boldin

Forte

Maclin

Barber

Favre

Ryan

I think it works. I probably reached for Finley, but he would have been gone in the fourth. Tweaking the TE scoring definitely changes a draft. Dallas Clark was 2nd ranked receiver in this format last year.

wiegie did that in one league this year. had the first pick (CJ), then went dallas clark, vernon davis. with the 1.5 for TE catches, clark actually scored more points than andre johnson last year, and davis scored more than moss and wayne. so yeah, if you went that direction it would absolutely make sense to start a TE at your flex spot.

I'm not sure the rest of your league understands the implications of the scoring system. Looks like it might cost them dearly.
