We are running our league on ESPN manager. I just sent out a welcome letter with the draft date and info. I also asked for any suggestions or change requests before the season starts so we can vote. When it happens you can't take it personally when owners get upset. The best & only way to diffuse it is to stay within the spirit of the rules and if owners don't agree then bring it to a vote and take it out of your hands. More times than not you'll find that owners will understand and sympathize with the position you are in and respect your decision. Disclaimer: This response in no way has anything to do with me screwing up waivers in both MSHB leagues. Oh, and talk them into switching over to MFL. Good luck. True. When "asked" to be commish of our local league I just said I'd rather not play than be commish. If you're in a league with dweeby children, you can be the best commish in the world and it won't matter much. A good commish stays on top of things but IMO should have little if any more power than the owners, ie everything is done democratically. And being a commish shouldn't take much effort for an established league with well-defined rules unless the owners are serious d-bags. Hardest parts to me were getting everyone to agree and stick to a draft date and paying their freakin money. Had one person (who used to frequent this site in fact) who drafted but never paid. I don't think we've had the same commish for more than a season since the league started. I've commished my league for 10 years and it's crazy because I'm still usually in the top 2 of the league except for one or maybe 2 years where I was near the bottom... When something does come up, don't rush to decide on a ruling, gather the facts, consult the rules, decide, stick to it. 4. Any rules that seem grey, try and clean up the language so it is black and white. (This can take years though) 5. Full disclosure about all problems and decisions. Tell all members what you are doing and why. 6. Know you aren't going to please everyone. Just try your best. Treat them all the same. 7. Leave time for your own team. Nothing sucks more than being out of it week 7 but you still have to follow along with the league to do your job and make sure they all have fun. (This can take years though) +1 Can't emphasize this one enough. I'm commishing four leagues this year... Whether it's a league I started (and wrote the rules for), like my "local" keeper league, or a BOTH league that I inherited, the common them I am noticing is that it's very difficult to have a set of rules that don't have loopholes, gray areas, or areas that are left open for interpretation. My goal in all four leagues has been to "clean up" the rules, so the loopholes and gray areas go away. Even in the keeper league that I started three years ago (which has a fairly complex set of rules), I've had to update/clarify things several times since its inception. It's a work in progress, but you have to start somewhere. So... If nothing else, my #1 suggestion would be to go through the rules with a fine-toothed comb... not only to familiarize yourself with them, but to fill in any potential "cracks" as well.
