Matt Leinart is On The Block

(Rotoworld) Citing "several sources," FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports that the Cardinals are actively trying to trade Matt Leinart. Analysis: The desired compensation is unclear, but Arizona has contacted multiple teams. They probably shouldn't hold out for more than a sixth-round pick with Leinart's trade stock at an all-time low. The 27-year-old's contract calls for a $2.5 million base salary in 2010, which will be prohibitive for most teams. Leinart will take time to learn another offense, and has not been open to settling for a backup job. Ultimately, he'll probably be released.

Ultimately, lol @ AZ. What, are they jealous of Cincy and don't want them to corner the mkt on bonehead moves? As stated, Leinart's trade stock is at an all-time low. He's disappointing, but they have little to gain from a trade and potentially a lot to lose. I know he's looked bad and odds are against it, but right now it's worth holding on for awhile. Start Anderson if need be, and when he continues to falter, give Leinert a shot.

John Skelton needs to be given a chance. Great presence in the pocket, takes command of the offense and from what I have seen so far, has the respect of his team-mates while under center. Passes are crisp, great accuracy and by golly, people like him.

At this point, i really think they're only choice is trade or cut him. They've obviously seen enough where they have no confidence in him at all. Otherwise they would've given him a few starts at least. Plus, this is the second time this happened in 3 years. He's done in AZ.

Willing to go out on a limb and say that he doesn't own Hall on any. Skelton is having a hard time beating out the unknown commodity for the #3 job.

Rotoworld: According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Cardinals see some "Kurt Warner qualities" in undrafted rookie QB Max Hall.

Hall has a been a "tremendous surprise" outplaying fellow rookie John Skelton throughout camp, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him with a couple of spot starts late in the season. Mort joins NFL Network's Mike Lombardi in speculating that Matt Leinart won't be on the final roster because the Cardinals don't want to lose one of the rookies on waivers.

5 Teams That Could Use Leinart

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/447447-...former-1st-roun

Patriots backup? Make sense. The problem with trading Leinart is his contract -- It's got a $7.3 million balloon salary in 2011.

I would say there is a 0 % chance of him ending up on New England. Not their style to take on a whiny biatch. Only team i could see would be Seattle out of that group.

actually I own Hall in 2. I had to cut him in another yesterday due to roster size, but yes, both should be owned actually.

Some oddities that just don't compute in this whole "Trade Leinart" situation:

Didn't Leinart just go 9/10 with a TD in the last game that was supposed to be an open competition between he and Anderson? I'm not saying that this makes Leinart suddenly an uber-stud QB, but it seems like that's a pretty good game manager for a team that wants to be a smash-mouth running team per the HC.

Is AZ really willing to start the season with only 2 rooks behind Anderson?

Is AZ really willing to annoint Anderson as their starter? The same Anderson who couldn't hold off Brady Quinn half his time in CLE? The same Anderson that CLE jettisoned in favor of "I-never-met-an-INT-I-couldn't-throw" Delhomme, who CAR jettisoned in favor of Matt Moore?

I guess I'm having some difficulty getting my head around this whole thing. AZ knows exactly what it will get from Anderson starting. They don't know what they'll get with Leinart starting for an appreciable time, since they've never given him a chance to be their premier guy in the regular season. He may suck, but I can't see where he'd be worse than Anderson, and Skelton isn't ready by a damned sight.

Unless AZ agrees to pay a large portion of his salary, he is untradable. If you trade for him, you get that contract too. Lienart will end up being released.

I don't agree with that. Any team could sign him and give him a trial run for a year for $2.485M (not an huge amount under the current cap) and cut him if they don't like him before his 2011 $7.36M plus $5.5M roster bouns would kick in.

Trading him or cutting him would also accelerate his signing bonus so that it would be a wash in this year's salary for the Cards, so that's another knock against AZ just cutting him loose.

I think 2.5 mil is a boatload for a backup QB. Then he has that boat anchor contract next year. How many teams would take a QB who was jetisoned by the team that drafted him to be a backup, knowing that even if he works out, they would have to renegotiate his contract?

Leinart cut his own throat with his comments about it being a personal problem. I think a new contract would have to be in place before any trade could be consumated. Teams DO trade players who had big contracts and remain on the hook for part of his salary, for instance, Faneca. The Jets have to pay 5 mil of his compensation this year, while he plays for AZ.
