Knowshon Moreno

Let's run a Moreno thread because I anticipate a lot of questions & comments once he's listed as "limited participant" next Tuesday. Then you know the "questionable" tag will be posted on the Week 1 Injury Report, and the fun will really begin.

Latest posts:

NFL.com's Adam Rank: "[Jason]La Canfora did raise an interesting point, in that these hamstring injuries tend to linger over the course of the season until you have the chance to take a few months off."

Denver Posts' Lindsay Jones: "Moreno wore an orange "non-contact" jersey during practice [Tuesday]. Before practice, Moreno told reporters he felt he was around 80 percent recovered from the injury."

I love my Broncos, but I don't think there's any FF value there this year.

Orton can be a decent QB2. And yes, Moreno will put up some numbers, but I think he's still over-valued due to the hammy that will linger.

I picked up Gaffney as my 2nd to last WR and think he has some value. It looks like the running situation in Denver is going to be a disaster this season and Orton is going to have to throw a ton. We'll see.

Denver Broncos RB Correll Buckhalter (neck, back), S Brian Dawkins (undisclosed), OG Chris Kuper (undisclosed), CB Champ Bailey (undisclosed), OT Ryan Clady (knee) and TE Richard Quinn (ankle) returned for the team's practice Tuesday, Aug. 31, reports Lindsay Jones, of The Denver Post.

Huddle Up: Buckhalter actually practiced in pads during team drills while Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) wore a no-contact jersey and had somewhat less participation from what we can gather.

The Broncos have been bringing him back slowly. Moreno has been working with the team's strength coaches every day and going through his rehab with the team's trainers. He's usually walking over to the Broncos' weight room when the team begins its practice each day.

Given all that, though, Moreno isn't expected to play in the final two preseason games, and the Broncos hope his first competitive carry comes in the regular-season opener in Jacksonville.

This hamstring injury just doesn't leave me with a good feeling about Knowshon this year. Think back a couple years when Ryan Grant hurt his hammy in the early preseason. He was pretty much a bust, and I have a feeling I won't end up with Knowshon on any of my teams this year since he never seems to make it past the 5th round, and I wouldn't value him higher until I see some evidence that the hammy is truly behind him (which I won't truly get before my drafts have all taken place).

A few thoughts from a packers homer...

Ryan Grant isn't the talent that Knowshon Moreno is.

Ryan Grant didn't have an Elite tackle to run behind.

Ryan Grant still put up 1,300 yards in the season you were talking about. What killed him is the playcalling in the redzone and his low TD total. That and everyone drafting him as a top 6 RB that year.

Moreno didn't play in the preseason finale but apparently he warmed up OK, even led the team out of the tunnel "in a dead sprint."

When he runs, Moreno doesn't appear to have the explosiveness or the confidence to plant his leg and drive into a cut he's going to need to play against the Jaguars. That's why skill-position players in the NFL dread hamstring injuries, especially one as serious as Moreno's appears to have been.

Per CBS, sounds like he's a go for Week 1:

News: Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno will play in the team's season-opener a second-straight year after missing several weeks to end the preseason. His rehabilitation from a hamstring injury has kept him out of preseason games but saved his body for regular-season wear and tear. While Moreno admits it could take him a little time to get used to the speed of the game, he's prepared to give his all. "I've got to get past that phase where I’m hesitant," Moreno said. "What I've got to do now is test it out and see how it holds up. I'm not going to be hesitant. I’m going to go for it.”

Analysis: We like Moreno's mentality here, though we don't like that he's been off the field against competition for over a month. He plays at Jacksonville this Sunday, which has a re-stocked front seven including linebacker Kirk Morrison and rookie defensive tackle Tyson Alualu. We're hesitant to recommend him as anything more than a No. 2 Fantasy RB because of his hamstring, which may or may not keep him from performing at his best.

When you are looking at starting Moreno, or any other RB (or Orton at QB, for that matter), know that the DEN O-line is a complete shambles right now. 2 rooks and a journeyman are going to be 3 of the starting 5 guys there this weekend, including OT. If you have other feasible options at RB or QB, I'd look pretty hard at them.

All Moreno needs is the quietly brilliant gameplanning of McDaniels.
