Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith might get cut?

"One regime change and a devastating knee injury later, the Detroit Free Press writes that Smith may not even make the Lions roster this year."

I thought Smith actually looked serviceable -- though a little rickety -- in the Cleveland exhibition. If Smith is cut you would think they'd be in the market for someone to spell Best, handle some short-yardage and help at goal-line. Maybe they have plans for talented FB/RB Jerome Felton?

Didn't Mo Morris look good when he got the nod towards the end of last year? I didn't get to see a lot of games but I thought the highlights and stats were pretty good. Maybe he has outplayed Ksmith for the #2 job? I thought everyone was pretty much on the same page that a rookie (especially one with the size and injury history of Best) shouldn't be given 20+ carries per game and be expected to last too long.

I think the Lions need somewhat of a power runner to compliment Best. Willis McGahee would be the guy, methinks.

I think 20 touches is the plan. 15-17 carries, a few catches, maybe a direct snap wildcat occasionally. A kick or punt return here and there.

You don't take a RB in the first round, one with that kind of ability, and just give him 12-15 touches.

Okay, now I'm confused. We're going to give a RB like Forte, who has prototypical NFL RB size, a maximum of 300 touches to protect him, but we're going to give a smurf like Best at least 320 touches (which would have been 7th most in the NFL last year, BTW)?

I really don't think Best could handle the load.....as a potential Best owner, I hope he's in a RBBC so he can stay fresh and keep the hope alive of him breaking a big play...

I'll say Best gets about 15 attempts per game with about 3-5 receptions....this alone would be worth taking, but I'd rather him get closer to 12 attempts a game....

there's no way I can see Best handling more than 220 handoffs per game and he could average 15-17 attempts per game if he misses like 5 of them which would be the likely scenario...

not to beat a deadhorse or change the subject......but i agree...and this is why i feel some are too down on mccluster or at least mistaken by saying he isnt worthy of drafting....he was taken 6 spots behind best.....i know dexter is smaller...but i also expect less touches for mccluster than i do for best....i think yer in the right ballpark on guessing bests touches(and i like his situation overall).....id put mccluster down at 10-12(could be more or less depending how much they plan on using him in the return game)....

you want to keep these guys fresh....but you dont take guys like spilller, best, and mccluster to be bit players when you have needs across the board

same thing was said of brian westbrook for years and years....

too small...

played at villanova....

will never be able to handle the size and speed of nfl...

could never handle a full rushing load...

too injury prone....

blah blah blah....

If I'm not mistaken, people were similarly very upbeat on fellow Cal alum JJ Arrington when he was drafted by AZ also...

You want to find one super-successful mighty mite like Westbrook and I'll find five who failed miserably. That's a poor argument either way.

Chuck Norris can't carry Jack Bauer's jock.

There would be no need. At the very mention of Chuck Norris' name, Jack Bauers' berries would immediately ascend, never to drop again.

*On a side note, this phenomenon and early patenting of the aforementioned procedure by Chuck Norris International Inc. was the genesis of the now hyper-successfull and multi-million dollar franchising enterprise known as "Vasectomies In Seconds", wherin customers can be sterilized and have the "fear of Chuck" put into them all in the time it takes to sweeten one's coffee. Also, for a slight extra charge, one can have their pants pressed and shoes shined while they wait.

and they'd be absolutely correct.

Westbrooks touches per year as a starter:

2003: 154 (15 games played)

2004: 250 (13 games played)

2005: 217 (12 games played)

2006: 317 (15 games played)

2007: 368 (15 games played)

2008: 287 (14 games played)

2009: 86 (8 games played)

So, lets see...he had two season's in his entire career where he had over 300 touches....neither year was he able to play all 16 games. For as wonderful as he as those two years, the prime of his career was cut short significantly by the abuse he took as a smaller player carrying the entire RB load for the team.

is this really what you think detroit has in mind for its 1st round pick? In his very first year playing in the NFL? I highly, highly doubt it.

I think many teams are going to migrate away from this mentality. To costly to their cash cows.

Granted, since I have Best and Smith (as the handcuff), I wouldn't mind seeing him go to another team like, oh, maybe a Oakland? I could use another starter on my roster!
