i havent really had time to check into his situation much recently.....but as you can probably tell by now...i own ryan matthews....every bit of news ive been hearing is about vjax....anyone know anything about mcneils situation.....seems like a guy theyd be much more concerned about getting suited up than vjax....it would be comforting as a matthews owner knowing this guy was going to be suiting up....any news? any chance this guy shows up soon?

Unless he signs his tender, AJ Smith is laying down the law with the All-Pro. He was saddled with a 3 game suspension by the Chargers along with V-Jax. so at the very ealiest, you will see him week 4. You just don't replace an All-Pro left tackle with a scrub but apparently that doesn't seem to bother AJ at all.

I seen somehwere today that AJ was squaking that if McNeil wants to play he needs to come in and sign his tender and he wasn't talking about the 3.2 million one he was talking about the lower one.

Seems to me that it never going to happen. Maybe he would still consider the 3.2 one but I can't see a player giving in and signing what was it for 683K or something ?

Here is what I was looking at

Marcus McNeill - T - Chargers

Though the Chargers are interested in trading Vincent Jackson, holdout LT Marcus McNeill remains in their plans.

McNeill may be a part of the team's long-range planning, but they're not being realistic in their approach. In the event of injuries, owner Dean Spanos says the Bolts will try to find "the best guy we can possibly find unless Marcus wants to come in and sign his tender. That's my position. And that's not the $3.2 (million) tender. That's the (lower tender)." September 10 - 1:13 p.m. ET

yeah from what i hear/gather aj is pretty vindictive and has quite an ego......but i mean...with jackson you can see where hed be viewed as a cog....but an all pro left tackle? pretty vital to keeping your star upright....and helping pave the way for your rookie rb that you moved up quite a bit for.....hes taken care of his stars in rivers and gates....i see no reason why hes playing such hardball with mcneil....i can see why with vjax though....

wasnt it a few years ago when he suspended gates for holding out or something...for like 1 game....and they played dallas...and had trouble scoring on like 4 plays at the end of the game from like the 10 yard line or something? they lost the game i think...and barely missed the playoffs or something like that

that really is an insult....i understand they set a deadline for mcneil to accept the 3.2...and it become a game between both sides....but 600k is an insult....again...mcneil doesnt seem like a cog piece....

Yes they did the same thing with Gates threw him on that execept list and Gates and when Gates finally showed up there was only 2 preseason games left so he had to sit out week 1 completed 3 games missed. I recall that game and them losing at the very end not getting into the end zone and then missing the playoffs exactly as you said.

Hopefully the same thing happens this year (though I can't see how they are the in the worst AFC division)

Put San Diego in another AFC division and they would not win their division and might miss the playoffs.

Just imagine if it was SD and Houston switched. Houston would be making the AFC playoffs every year while San Diego would never sniff another division title with Indy there.

Yeah, I read that same blurb. I really don't get this. Pay the man!!! He's earned it. V-Jax's contract demands were ridiculous, but teams don't let franchise LT's go, unless you are Buffalo.

Doesn't McNeil have a history of back problems? If so, couldn't this be the reason why AJ isn't wanting to sign him to big time money?

Ok, I understand that, but why insult the man by reducing his tender to a mere fraction of what they started at? They certainly were not required to reduce the tenders of McNeil and Jackson when the deadline came and went... that was a decision by AJ to punish these guys... and a bad one decision at that.

Because AJ is the General Manager and Marcus McNeil is the player. Smith knows the CBA and is following it. McNeil is trying to impose his will and it's not going to work. Smith is teaching him a lesson with reducing his pay. MM drew a line in the sand and started the war, but what he fails to realize is that AJ Smith has a lot more weapons, this being one of them.

I also think if Marcus would just show up and play, he'd get a contract. Say all you want about him, but that GM in San Diego is one of the best. He's done all you can hope for in a GM.

Land a franchise QB-Check

Build a franchise into a contender year in and year out-Check

The guy hits way more than he misses. He knows what he's doing. MM isn't bigger than the team. If he wants to act like he's bigger then this is what he gets. Did you see Antonio Gates hold out? No. Did he get taken care of? Yes. Smith does the right thing for the franchise. Caving into a player, be it McNeil, Jackson, Brett Favre, or whoever, if you show that you'll cave in you're setting a bad standard. Anytime anyone feels underpaid they're going to hold out and wait for big money.

I agree with everything you say, but lets not forget 1 thing here. AJ Smith did not get HIRED to be the GM. He inherited the position when John Butler died of cancer in 2003. Butler brought in AJ Smith from those 4 SB losing Buffalo Bills in 2001 where he was Director of Personal. Others seem to think this team is AJ's, it is now, but there are stil allot of Butler on this squad. He's an egotistical SOB and while I think V-Jax contract demands were ridiculous, you just cant replace an All-Pro LT. And to demean him by giving him the Vet minimum is saying what to the team? I am the Boss....I rule....You will all bow down to me...AJ Smith. Hogwash.

AJ Smith would be run out of just about any other NFL city. Guy got VERY lucky Rivers worked out too... but still, would the Chargers be better off with Brees over Rivers? He got nothing for Turner OR Brees. He does some things very well, but I'm sure glad he isn't the GM of my homer team. He is stubborn to near idiocy at times. If he owned a soup stand, he'd be the original soup nazi.

Gates/Rivers/Merriman/McNeil/Jackson are all his guys. He's a great GM, regardless of where he came from or if he's a prick or not.

Really? A guy who has built a team that has won how many AFC West titles in a row? Hard to ask if they'd be better with Brees or not, as he had a busted shoulder and wasn't super human at that point. He did get conditional picks for Turner and Brees... So he did get more than nothing.

San Diego will not win the AFC West this year because of all of this. This team is severely weakened by Smith's stance this offseason.

This division will be won by a 9-7 team, and my hunch says its the Raiders or the Chiefs. Probably the Raiders.

They don't need McNeal or Jacksonto win the West.

Clearly many here simply disagree with your opinion that he is a great GM. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

You see his attitude as team-first. Whereas I see it as AJ-first. When he insults these guys with his zero compromise attitude and his punishment of a reduced tender, every other player is watching and knows that if they want to actually be treated like adults and if they want a chance to get a decent deal, that they will need to do so with another team.

They also watched Rivers and Gates get their deals too...Two ways to approach these negotiations, no?

Yeah, A.J. is a real winner

Get rid of:

Marty Shottenheimer (after he coaches your team to a 14-2 record)

Drew Brees

Michael Turner

Vincent Jackson

Marcus Mcneil

Yup, the guy is a real winner. Sure his "winning" strategy will get S.D. a title any year now.

I'm still trying to figure out where Mathews was at end of the game.

Sure would've liked to have seen him run the ball when Chargers had the ball at end of game.

I think they were running there 2 minute offense and were pretty much passing it from there on out. Maybe they didn't want to overload him in a high pressure situation so soon.
