From today's UT:

McNeill signs tender

Marcus McNeill is in San Diego and has signed his tender.

McNeill signing today clears the way for him to play as soon as Oct. 17 at St. Louis.

He needs to sit out three games after signing and reporting due to his status on the Roster Exempt List.

A source said this was McNeill's decision in order "to get back to playing football."

"We're all very happy that Marcus has decided to sign his tender and get back to work," Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. "He has missed some time on the job, but we will be patient, get him up to speed and Coach (Norv Turner) will decide how quickly he gets on the field."

Unless he signs a long-term deal, the two-time Pro Bowl left tackle will make approximately $444,000 this season. He turned down a $3.168 million tender in the spring, had it reduced to $630,000 on June 15 and loses out on about $37,000 each of the weeks he does not play.

He is expected to begin working with the team Monday. While on the Roster Exempt List, he cannot play but can practice.

The Chargers had listened to trade offers for Vincent Jackson, who remains sitting out, but they told teams that called they were not moving McNeill. While they only wanted Jackson for this season, it was known the team wanted McNeill to remain a Charger long-term.

Whether a deal will get done soon is not known, but this clears the way for those talks to pick up.

McNeill, a second-round draft pick in 2006, started all but two games between his rookie season and the start of this year.

Brandyn Dombrowski is starting at left tackle in McNeill's place and could move to right tackle when McNeill returns. It was believed Dombrowski had a chance to unseat Jeromey Clary had McNeill reported during camp. That competition could resume in the coming weeks.
