TheDon
Is it a concern to start your DEF and your QB if they are playing against each other?? Would that decrease the chances of both of them having big games? I have Matt Ryan vs. New Orleans DEF.
Big John
I would not be that concerned. If starting both will get you the most points in your opinion, you should start both.

Thanks! I've always had that concern. Im not sure how valid it is.
Big Country
It's about as valid as the QB/WR hookup or starting a WR of your opponents QB to "negate" points.... in other words, no validity at all.

Would that decrease the chances of both of them having big games? I have Matt Ryan vs. New Orleans DEF. the question is, does Matt Ryan know he's playing your fantasy team's D? If so, I'm sure he'll try harder to not throw picks and he'll make sure Michael Turner fumbles a few times.
wolfer
you're not dressing the NO D for the hope of low point totals/low yardage allowed, you are dressing them because of their propensity to create the 'big play'. Both the QB and the D can get their points but I don't know anything about your roster to tell you if you are leaving points on the bench. Good luck this weekend. Rather depends on your scoring rules really.
Bronco Billy
Holy crap! How stupid are you that you didn't do your research and drafted a QB and a D that play each other in week 3? You start whomever is on your roster that you think will score the most points. Period. There is no other scenario, and matchups don't mean a damned thing, whether it's within your roster or how your opponent's lineup sets against your players. Completely agree though there is definitely a validity in considering which D to play, assuming you have more than one, when your QB or other offensive player is going against one of them, again assuming that yards and points conceded are in the scoring system. I don't agree. You analyze your options at each position independently and start the option you feel will score the most. If you have two QBs, you pick which one you think will score more. If you have two defenses, you pick which one will score more. If they happen to be playing each other, so be it. Their both being on your fantasy team will have absolutely no bearing on their performance or on your analysis of their expected performance. I was coming at it from a somewhat different direction and probably misunderstood the question.
Furd
Here is a simple exercise that you might try. Tuesday morning list your starting lineup and write the number of ff points each of your starters scored right next to his/its name. Specifically note how many points your QB scored. Now make another list. Again list your starters and the ff points they scored. Except this time, replace your starting DEF and its points with the DEF that was on your bench (or one that you could have picked up off of the ww) and its points. Then specifically note the ff points that your QB scored. Compare. This exercise is useful in other situations. You want to negate Flacco's points by starting Mason? You want the "double points" from starting a QB and WR from the same team, Check it out.
