How has fantasy football changed the NFL …for you?

I can’t sleep so I figured I’d ask this. Jump in the wayback machine when the Rams were in LA and Roman Gabriel was at the helm. I couldn’t stand the Rams though I grew up in So Cal, basically because they sucked. Not sure how it happened, but I became a Raiders fan. I didn’t care if any one WR or RB did well, I only cared if they won. Then they came to LA and my dreams were answered. Then Al Davis moved them back to Oakland and I hated them (insert picture of me scraping the Raiders bumper sticker off my GTO). After that I didn’t really have a favorite team.

Jump to 1997 and I move to CO. I like the Doncos and the locals love them, but I don’t… I like them. Then I was introduced to fantasy football and everything changed. I rooted for individual players and followed them as they moved teams. Since I pledge no allegiance to any team, I don’t care about homer picks. I really don’t care who wins either, but at the end of the season will usually root for the underdog Cinderella team. The 10 minute ticker is now streamlined and the networks are on board with the experts making picks… things changed.

Just curious to the devout homers out there. You’re in a SB and your home team is vying for a trip to the playoffs. Your fantasy SB is on the line and you need you home team to lose for you to win your fantasy Super Bowl… who do you root for... on the inside?

Great post..as much as I love FF I would root for the Raiders any day over my Fantasy team. However I don't think I will ever end up in that situation as I always end up with most of them on my team. (Gradkowski, DMC, Murphy)

A) This question has been asked on here more than once.

 The success of your fantasy team never has to mean that your Homer team loses.

C) Even before I got really into FF I used to pull for guys on teams that were not my favorite team. I have, on more than one occasion, pulled for the individual success of a player whilst pulling for my team to beat his.

Bottom line though... unless my mortgage(or some such nonesense) were riding on it, I would always root for my team above all else.

Bottom line is I love to see big plays. Even on a team I don't like I can appreciate great players. All FF has done is allow me to enjoy the stats that they put up more and a little more detail about those guys. But to answer my homer team comes before the FF team every time.

I'd be surprised if anyone would actually admit it on these boards that they would root against their home team (or rather root for players playing against their home team). I think the perception is that you aren't a "true homer" if you put FF over your home team. Sadly, fantasy football has created in me a subtle change where I now temper my reactions to plays involving the Broncos until I know the FF implications. I'll still get excited when the Broncos score, but then I do a quick mental check to see where that score hurt me in FF. Sometimes I wish I could just tune FF out from kickoff on Sundays to Tuesday morning and just enjoy the game of football. But I just can't do it. And in the fantasy playoffs, my competitive fire often overrides my home team loyalty. It sucks, and every year when week 17 arrives, I always enjoy the refreshing feeling of just watching two teams play a hard fought game and not care which players do well and which don't. It also gets weird when players get hurt and there's that conflict between seeing a guy get carted off the field, having compassion for him and hoping he'll be okay, but then wondering if you'll get that player's backup on the waiver wire.

So, in a nutshell, I'd be lying if I said that fantasy football hasn't changed how I behave and react to watching my team play. In the end, I do want to see the Broncos win, but I might not quite enjoy the moment as much when they do win if a signifcant FF implication exists. It's worst when the Broncos are playing on Monday night and I've got close ff matchups a stake.

We had a similar thread, a few years ago. I fell in love with the Rams helmets in '65. Eddie Meador, Les Josephson & Deacon were my faves. Billy Truax also, until he dropped a ball to cost them a playoff game v. Minny . . . on my birthday!

Started FF in '85ish. Rams & Bengals were the worst teams in the 90s. Somewhere in the early 90s, FF took precedence.

It was not a conscious decision.

Did I enjoy the Warner Rams? Yes indeed, but it wasn't the same.
