Anyone else have problems with the penatly for breaking Shipley?

This looks legal to me. Shipley shouldn't be such a sissy. If he would have hit TO like that he would have broken his own shoulder.

He hit him square in the helmet. How is this even discussable as clean? I'm as old-school as it gets - I love seeing a body-shot on special teams laying someone out flat, or a LB put his shoulder into the small of a QB's back and flatten him, and maybe even some good ol' eye-gouging at the bottom of piles, but given what we now know about head injuries there is no place in the game for this. These are extremely serious injuries that are 100% avoidable. Don't hit the guy in the head.

The NFL needs to start suspending players for these plays.

There are innate dangers for 140lb 5'6" wrs running crossing routes.

That's a cop-out. Just because a guy is a certain size it's ok to commit a blantant penalty? I guess Wes Welker should probably watch out for Tonya Harding then cause that would be perfectly legit.

Jordan Shipley

Height: 6-0 Weight: 190

Guess who:

Height: 6-0 Weight: 198

Here's a hint:

Wayne is a tough cookie but is smart enough to go down before contact alot of plays and go out of bounds before contact too. Not a good enough example to support your claim from my eyes. It was a tough hit but I wouldn't have thrown the flag for that....or even fined him. Flag is one thing.

My point was that Shipley is listed as only 8 pounds less than Wayne, not the massively over-exaggerated 5'4' claim.

I'd totally agree this was clean if the hit was in the chest. All Ward had to do was bend his knees a couple of inches and that's what would have happened. Instead he jumped UP and into the helmet. No way I can ever get behind that.

I agree...the only reason he hit him in the head is because Shipley dropped his head to look at the ball. Ward simply delivered a blow; with his shoulder mind you, and seperated the ball from the player. That is his job and was legal in my mind. Violent yes, but the game is violent. Ugly yes, but people need to realize it is going to happen. If Ward had taken a step or two before the hit it is understandable, but he had no chance at all to stop. You are basically saying he can stop on a dime and not hit him. I agrgue had Ward tried to pull up and not hit him that way they both would have received concussions through a helmet to helmet collission. No one would argue Ward was dirty then would they?

Bend his knees a bit...SERIOUSLY! Have you ever played any sport at a collegiate level or higher? You have no understanding as to the speed of the game and how difficult a task that simple is in such a short period of time. Ward is simply being made out as an example because the NFL can. I want to see more hits like that...albeit without the injury.

It looked like he was leading with his shoulder to me.

Which is fine. No problem if he puts it in the players chest - I love big booming hits like that and what I watch football for. It's not against the rules and it's not nearly such a danger to the player. He didn't, he hit him in the helmet.

Flem...not trying to argue, but my point is that is what he was headed towards until Shipley dropped his head. It simply was an unfortunate set of circumstances.

Nor am I, but the circumstances are irrelevant. Coaches will teach you to put yourself in better position. If a DB gets caught flat-footed and the WR runs into him trying to make a catch, it's still PI. If a LB is chasing a RB and that RB cuts back and the LB's hand grabs the facemask in reaction, it's still a penalty. If a DE pulls a nice rip move and as a result the OT gets him in a choke hold, it's still holding.

Fact is he hit him in the head. Nothing else matters. I didn't call it a dirty play, I didn't call the guy a jerk for making it, I simply am saying the NFL can't let it continue.

I agree with that statement entirely.
