League and Player Inconsistency

The last couple of seasons it has become obvious that luck is becoming much more a factor in fantasy football than ever. If you look back at your drafts compared to who the leaders are now, it paints a rediculous picture.

 

league parity, RBBC, and pass happy, spread the ball around offenses are killing fantasy football for me. And I am 3-2 and 4-1 in my 2 main leagues.. Honestly, I have gotten lucky.

 

Now, I did have the gumption to trade up in the 4th round of my draft to pick up Arian Foster. And 1 or 2 of my sleepers are doing ok. But it is all over the place this year.

 

I am also having a real hard time trying to disect team defenses this year.

Fantasy Football is mostly luck that can be helped by season management. However playoffs always seem to be won by a late sleeper. This in combination with the fact that leagues seem to be getting more competitive every year. With all the information out there people who do their homework aren't at such an advantage anymore. Leagues of 12 now usually have 10-11 people who have a real shot at winning.

This year is no different than any other. Sure, there is luck involved. There has to be. It seems like every year I draft a dud in the first couple rounds (DeAngelo Williams this year). The key is to make savvy waiver wire moves and trades if possible. Last year I came within 5 points of winning the SB on a team where I drafted the following players in the first five rounds: (Forte, Gore, Jennings, Bowe and Kevin Smith). I even wasted my 7th and 8th round picks on Lavernaues Coles and Derrick Ward respectively. The only two picks I made in the first 10 rounds worth anything were Frank Gore and DeSean Jackson.

 

Yet I still was the total points leader and #1 overall team that year despite the bad luck of my draft. I had some late round gems that helped (Shiancoe and Steve Smith NYG come to mind), but I had to work my a$$ off on the waiver wire (Miles Austin the week before he blew up - I'd have never gotten him after that KC game) and a couple trades that netted me Tony Gonzalez and Jamaal Charles (before he blew up).

 

There's always luck involved, but there's just as much hard work involved in contending for a title IMO.

I think its actually better and there is less luck involved than say 5 or 6 years ago. Back in the day you could win your league in the draft or at least the first 4 or 5 rounds. Now its won in later rounds, waiver wire and trades.
