Matthews?

Recommended Posts

In terms of a "bust", the question I'm asking is, can a coach be the determining factor of that label? I know that at the end of the day, in terms of FF, it is about points scored. But if you look at his [limited] play it has been pretty solid. His average yards this season; 3.9/5.2/6.1/6.6/5.3, respectively. It's hard to say someone putting those kinds of--albeit limited--numbers up is a bust. I am still very optimistic at this point. Having said that, this is the first week I'm actually sitting him. Because even though I believe he is going to bust out, I think putting him in my lineup every week is the wrong way to go about waiting for this to happen. On top of that, with the injuries in their passing game, NE will probably focus more on the run game. One more thing, he sat out of practice wednesday, so saying he is "healthy" might be a little inaccurate.

Agreed. Only concern is Tolbert getting GL work.

I have alot of concerns with the way the Chargers are handling there playbook. The most glaring is Norv Turner. With AJ Smith handcuffing the offense with the staunch stance on V-Jax and McNeil. The entire offense is out of whack and with both Floyd/Naanee out, they will almost for sure stack up the box against Mathews. Oh I almost forgot...Gates and his injury to boot.

As soon as the front office realizes what a mistake it was to hire Norv, maybe next year we will see that explosive offense again. Until then, don't expect anything more than Rivers chucking it for 300+yds every game. (Not that thats a bad thing for Rivers owners.)

Norv has blown damn near every year hes been with the boltz. He had a super bowl team but has gone 8-8. Even now, he has a most excellent young back that is avg over 5 ypc but does nto use him to control the game which has lead to a shoot out and a 2-4 start when they have the talent and should be 5-1 and the very worst.

That being said, I think this still is the best possible opportunity for Mathews. Even if they stack the box, Mathews has this innate ability to break loose. As long as they feed the ball to him, they can control the clock and keep the ball out of Brady's hands. If they loose sight of it and try to get into a shoot out with only one skilled receiver in gates, they can for sure look forward to another loss and a 2-5 share of the bottom of the AFC West, along with the Raiders.

Quick, someone tell AJ that Wade Phillips has a job.... That's all the boltz need is hearing the Phillips might be available.

In terms of where he was drafted, it is unlikely you could call him anything but a bust. That being said, if he stays healthy and puts together a nice run here at the end of the year he can still redeem himself. Once could imagine that the Chargers will lean more on their running game going forward with all the WR/TE issues, but then again they have the number one offense in the league with Matthews as a non-factor. I think the only way Mathews gets going numbers-wise would be if Tolbert started wearing down, which could happen. I could envision Matthews coming on strong later with "fresh legs" and doing some damage. I certainly wouldn't count him out at this point if you have waited this long on him.

This makes ABSOLUTELY no sense. He's a bust because they haven't fed him the ball enough? Is that his fault or the coaching staff? When given the chance, he has performed. Giving him the ball 9 times when hes averaging 6+ ypc (against the cards and the Raiders) is just ludicrous. STL, he was avg 5.3 ypc and if they had used him and held the ball longer, they might have had a chance to at least stay in the game but they would go 3 and out trying to pass the ball and gave the ball right back to a hot offense.

You can't call him a bust, IMHO, because he's never been given the proper opportunity. Calling any RB a bust that is avg 5.1 ypc is (again IMHO) merely pissed that they spent a draft pick/trade on him and he hasn't produced. That's not his fault given he has produce when he has been given the ball.

I'm not saying the player is a bust. I'm saying in fantasy terms he has to be considered a bust for this year since he was drafted mid 2nd round, and it doesn't really matter the reasons why.

But step back and look at what your sayin.... What does Forsett average YPC when he is given limited touches, Danny Woodhead, Charles, Hightower when Wells Starts those are all guys this year alone who are not game planned for extensively bc they are COPB's and that's all you can say Matthew's has been since Week1 every other it's been a Game Time Decision or was told he would be limited so nobody game plan's for him. You always wanna think it so easy just to look at stat's and think that is everything how they got those number's is what matters. If he were to become the full time 20+ carry guy for Charger's you will see a big change.

In fantasy terms he's a bust cause he hasn't lived up to his high ADP, but in real life he isn't a bust because he just hasn't gotten the opportunity. The Chargers should've realized after their bad start that they need to run it more to win, which should help Mathews value going forward.

It seems like the Chargers panic if they go down a score early, and think they need to throw, throw, throw. I guess it's hard to blame them since Rivers is a stud (in real NFL & fantasy terms)...

I hate Norv's run game strategy that is the only thing holding Matthews back, but in terms of Matthews he isn't a bust at all. He is a solid back just hasn't been given the carries, but I expect him to do good this week almost all the Chargers receivers are hurt. The only two Rivers is gonna look at are Gates (if he plays still kind of washy on this) and Crayton I don't have much faith in Davis.
