Changing Keeper Rules Midseason

I'm in a keeper league where the commissioner changed the keeper rules at week 5. Before there were no specific rules except only keeping up to 4 players. Now he made it that you lose a draft pick for each keeper two rounds earlier than when he was previously picked. This rule ruins my team for the future. What do you think?

Sounds like the commish meant well ,but didn't really think this through. Your draft may have changed considerably if the rules were in place prior.

There is never an instance where league rules should be changed in the middle of a season. This is done in the offseason.

You need to have your keeper rules locked down before you switch to a keeper format. Assuming this is your first year and you haven't kept any players yet. In that case, spend the off season discussing and passing the keeper rules, then draft from scratch. You need a do-over on switching to a keeper league. Here's our keeper rules:

4.1 Each team can keep from 0 to 3 players.

4.2 Players drafted in rounds 1 - 2 cannot be keepers.

4.3 Players can be kept a maximum of 3 times. For example, you can draft a player in 2001, and then keep them for the next 3 years: 2002, 2003, 2004. In 2005, this player must go back into the draft pool of players.

4.4 For each player kept, you must give up a draft pick 2 rounds higher than the player's draft position the year before. If you keep an undrafted player (a free agent) from the previous year, you must give up your 12th round pick. Players that were drafted and then cut still maintain their draft status.

Example 1: You draft Thomas Jones RB Arizona in round 9 in 2001. He becomes the starter and you decide he's one of your keepers. In 2002, you must give up your 7th round draft pick (he becomes effectively your 7th round pick) to keep him. In 2003, he becomes your 5th round choice, and if you keep him for a third year, you must give up your 3rd round pick in 2004.

Example 2: You draft S. Morris, WR KCC in round 4 in 2001. You decide to keep him. In 2002, he becomes your 2nd round draft pick (you give up a 2nd rounder). In 2003, because his draft status was round 2 in the previous year, he is no longer eligible for keeper status and is returned to the draft pool.

4.5 If you do not have a draft pick for the correct round to give up to keep a player, you must give up the next higher draft pick. This can happen if you have 2 keepers that have the same draft status from the previous year.

Example: You decide to keep your draft pick in round 14 from the previous year and you also want to keep an undrafted free agent. Both require that you give up your 12th round draft pick. Since you only have one 12th round selection, to keep both players, you must give up picks for rounds 11 and 12.

4.6 When the draft is complete, the draft position the player ends up at will determine next year's draft position status.

Example: You have 2 free agents you want to keep. Based on the rule above, you will have to give up a 12th and an 11th round pick to keep each. If the draft completes with your 2nd keeper being your 11th round draft pick, and you decide to keep that same player next year, you will have to give up a 9th round pick to keep that player the following year.

Tip: Put your best keeper free agent in the 12th round slot.

4.7 Keepers must be finalized 7 days before the draft.

Rules like that are what I like to call by-laws...By-Laws should not be changed due to they are what the league is about...If a team has few keepers or none in the first few rounds its going to affect ow they would vote for the 2 round rule....It's something that you guys need to figure out after this season and then stick to whatever the rule is...Sounds to me like you guys are going to be better off throwing all your players back in and starting over after this season...Oh and vote in a new commish..if for no other reason then starting this stupid controversy...

He said there needs to be some rules in place...no specific reason. There actually was a league vote and the majority was ok with the new rules. Just think its something that should have been done before the draft.

1) You should absolutely have a VERY good legitimate reason to change rules mid-season, or you shouldn't even propose it....

But that aside, does your league have a rule that only a "majority" is needed to change the rule mid-season? Because when you say that, all I hear is "not unanimous". IMO, the ONLY way you should ever be able to change a rule mid-season is if it's 100% unanimous among all owners; And most serious leagues won't even allow rule changes until the off-season, for obvious reasons.

Additionally, as the commish of my local, I wouldn't even allow it to go to vote unless it's an extremely flawed rule and/or threatens the integrity of the league. In any other circumstance, you are required to abide by the rules you set in place before the season. It's as simple as that.

The simple 4 keeper rule does not meet this criteria, and thus, cannot and should not even be voted on, particularly in week 5, when reality sets in and playoff implications are on the line. It is NOT right in the least bit to go back and change, regardless of a justification or lack thereoff.

If anyone has an issue with it, they're right. They should.
