Vernon Davis

With Romo going down, Kitna seemed to like Witten. Could this be the case with Davis? I am going to see what happens in London first. Usually its the TE's and RB's that benefit from new QB's (for example: Jones-Drew last week). Gore should be worn to death this week but Denver knows that. And Crabtree will have to deal with Bailey. So I am thinking that Davis (if he is healthy enough) should get his share of targets.

Thoughts?

not holding out much hope for VD this week. with predictability of the offense this season (run on 1st, screen on 2nd, run on 3rd) and a shiny new QB under center, i can't think the playcalling will be incorporating the pass much on Sunday.

of course, the 49ers might just open everything up and let the kid throw 50 times just to see what he's made of, and accept that this season is turning into one big "teachable moment." in that scenario, i can see Davis going 7/105/1.

good luck!

I hope Im wrong but I think Troy Smith could dent V. Davis pretty hard, at least right out of the gates.

Maybe in a couple weeks he'll get a rhythm, but omg he hasn't had any reps all year. Just found out he was starting five days ago, on a plane to London?

Troy could be a lot worse. On a pure fantasy slant, Alex Smith gave Vernon Davis touchdowns. Tons of them. 10 in their last 14 games together.

This.

As a Davis owner in 1 league, I'm very concerned that the TDs could evaporate fast ... with A. Smith at QB, you knew that Davis would get his red zone targets no matter what, so even on a 3 catch/30 yard day, VD usually had FF value from finding the EZ once.

The one thing you have to keep in mind, though, is that VD is their #1 receiver. He is everyone's go to guy before any other receiver because he's not a normal TE but a HUGE WR that's able to get separation and run routes better than most the WR core ion the NFL. Its just how many opportunities he will get. Troy has an opportunity here, though. Alex hasn't been all that stellar so there is opportunity for a sneak in QB here.

If he can find a way to get Davis involved, he could have a good game.

Baily can't VD because of his size so Baily will be all over their deep threat, Crabtree so VD just could get ample looks today.

Agree about VD being the #1 option in the passing game ... but even though he may get his targets from whatever backup QB SFO uses over the next few games, it is the result of those targets I'm worried about. Say what you like about A. Smith being bad (and most of it will likely be correct) but the guy is a decent red zone QB, whatever else he does/does not do on the rest of the field.

This year, red zone stats for A. Smith:

- 21/28, 8 TD, 0 Int, 124.4 Rating

... compare to:

- Rivers > 18/43, 8 TD, 2 Int, 69.7 Rating

- Peyton > 21/34, 9 TD, 0 Int, 111.5 Rating

- Brees > 26/44, 9 TD, 1 Int, 94.6 Rating

Last season, red zone stats for A. Smith:

- 23/43, 10 TD, 0 Int, 100.0 Rating

Last season, 7 of Davis' TDs came in the red zone ... so far this year, all 4 of VDs scores were red zone TDs.

Anyways ... VD could see little or no drop in production with Alex out, or he could pretty much fall off the map fantasy-wise ... my gut tells me the latter will be more likely, and if so it will be due not so much to loss of production between the 20 yard lines, but rather due to a drop in red zone / TD production for Davis with A. Smith absent.
