Holiday Bowl - San Diego

Nebraska (10-3) vs. Washington (6-6)

Thursday, Dec. 30 - 9 p.m.

When's the last time a team that beat another by 35 during the regular season faced them again in the bowls?

Sucks for Nebraska. They're 4 pts away from going to the Fiesta Bowl and now they face a team they destroyed in the regular season.

How do you think Tennessee feels about their bowl matchup? Didn't they drop North Carolina off their schedule this year?

My general feeling is

Lack of depth and offensive ineptitude have been a problem for awhile. Oklahoma playing Uconn and NU playing Washington is more  than normal. I think Texas A&M playing LSU is the only B12 game that is playing a ranked team this year. Maybe NU just always gets the benefit of the doubt because they travel so well but the bowl games just seem more fooked than normal this year. The top BCS games look good though. Just not real thrilled about my favorite team's matchup. It's pretty much a lose / lose. If they go in flat and play down and lose or barely win, than they look bad. The only real way they look good is if they blow them out, but even then people will say they should have. Bo is going to have to do some of his best coaching to get his players excited for this game. Some good seniors are getting sent out in a blah bowl game.

Definately not the draw I was hoping for either  But, It's a different Washington team than who you faced in September so we'll see. It was, by far, the worst game we played all year and obviously Nebraska had something to do with that as they totally dominated us. We ran the ball well last time and our running game is much improved. Chis Polk is a monster and we'll need to establish the run game to take some pressure off of Jake. I'm sure his 4-20 performance is etched in his mind so he'll be looking for some redemption. The interiror lines are the biggest difference with these two teams so our skill players will need to play out of their minds and our defense will need to force some turnovers if we are going to have a chance.

Looking at the bowl matchups the Big 12 certainly got some great draws. Okie vs. UConn

Alamo Bowl - Oklahoma State (10-2) vs. Arizona (7-5)

Pinstripe Bowl - Kansas State (7-5) vs. Syracuse (7-5)

Holiday Bowl - Nebraska (10-3) vs. Washington (6-6)

TicketCity Bowl - Texas Tech (7-5) vs Northwestern (7-5)

Fiesta Bowl - Oklahoma (11-2) vs. Connecticut (8-4)

Cotton Bowl - Texas A&M (9-3) vs. LSU (10-2)

Which means they're pretty hosed. Like Square says, a no win situation. Throwing out the Texas, Pinestripe and Ticket City type games that nobody gives two poops about, they've got exactly one game where anyone would be impressed with a win. A&M v LSU. They've got a 10 win Mizzou playing a 5 loss Iowa who stumbled down the stretch, OU and Nebraska both playing way down, OSU who was top 10 2 weeks ago playing unranked AZ.

It really sucks for them because we'll basically know exactly as much about the Big 12 after the bowl season as we do now. Well, unless teams like OU and Nebraska crap the bed. And that's really too bad. For a league that has so many teams lingering around the top 25 this year, it would be nice for them to be able to prove it against other good teams.

Agreed. I guess it's just gut check time. You just never know with 19 - 21 year old kids how they are going to react. The underdogs have everything to play for (Ex. revenge for Wash) while the other teams have to play for pride after dropping a conference game and then ending up lower than expected. It's no excuse and I think most of the players will show up. It'll just affect some people and sometimes a few people can make the difference. It reminds me a bit of "bulletin board material" motivation. It never mattered to me when I played and I think most guys are driven more from within. But overall, there were always some of those guys that the extra chip on their shoulder made a difference in intensity.

Not that familiar with the middle tier Big 12 teams like Baylor, Kansas St, etc and I do still think Iowa is a decent ball club so I'm not calling for a BIg 12 sweep, but I do think they start the bowl season off at 2-0 with Oklahoma and Nebraska winning fairly easily.

Oklahoma betting line opened up at 17 1/2 so I really can't see even Coach Stoops losing this BCS game. Not as confident about Nebraska, but it would be one heck of a turnaround if Washington can make this a ballgame.

I'm not saying they sweep.

My point is simply this:

Essentially nobody cares if Baylor is better than Illinois. Same with the other lower-tiered bowl match-ups they're in. So, whether they sweep or get swept in those bowls has a rather marginal effect on the strength of the conference. No Big 12 honk is going to bang their chest about Baylor, K-State, and Tech "representing" against similar meddling teams from other conferences. Sure, if they happened to show well in those games, it would certainly be a nice "and by the way" to add to the top of the conference beating some good teams. But that's the problem. They only get one chance to really do that, with A&M. Sure, Iowa is a "decent ball club". But they're a "decent ball club" with 5 losses, three of them to end the season, 1 of those to a bad Minnesota team. Unless Mizzou blows them out, nobody is going to be particularly impressed. So, Mizzou loses, they suck, they win close, they pretty much suck, they win big, so what. That's hardly an enviable situation to be in. Same with OU and Nebraska. And the big problem for Nebraska is that UW does seem like a better team now. Good enough to beat them? Perhaps not, but if they're improved enough to make it a game, that reflects poorly on Nebraska, because of 56-21. Fair or not.

And this is, by no means, intended as a shot at the Big 12. I'm a fan of the game and would like as much closure as possible in the bowl seasons. We banter back and forth about which conference is the best and I actually think it's a fair and entertaining topic. Because the regular season offers so little opportunity to settle the debate. Now, it seems that one of the big 4 is going to be left out of the conversation, through no fault of there's (I assume). And that just basically sucks. And if I was a fan of any of the upper tier teams save A&M, I'd be pissed.

Careful .... Vtech is on a roll and has a coach that has a history of winning meaningful games. I was hoping that Stanford got a Wisky or Oklahoma draw.

naw - that is the kind of defensive team Luck & Co will do whatever they want against.

Agreed. You never know but I think it would be a major disappointment if Stanford loses this game. Guys around here are all talking about the remarkable turnaround V Tech made after their 0-2 start, but this is ACC country, where people pretend that teams around here are actually good. If Boise lost to them and then dropped a game to some crap team before turning it around and running off 10 straight, nobody would give a crap, but it wouldn't be that much different than what V Tech did.

OK, take away the freakish melt-down vs James Madison. Chight happens. For the last 5 years or so, V Tech has been a decent and sound team that is good enough to beat incomplete teams. And the ACC is full of those sorts of teams, so there you have it. They've dominated the league. But put them in front of a team with a great coach and a great QB, who also plays smart and sound football, and they lose. Problem is, the ACC hasn't had a team like that for a while. Hell, Wake won the damned thing a couple of years back. By being V Tech light. Sound in all phases, and there wasn't a talented enough team in the league to over-match them player by player.

Besides, both Luck and Harbaugh, the two most important guys on the team, are both auditioning for gigs on the next level. They'll show up.

74 FBS teams finished .500 or better and there are bowls for 70 of them.

On a closer look, Arizona St. (6-6) only had 4 wins against FCS schools, USC (8-5) is on probation, and W. Michigan (6-6) only won 5 against FBS schools.

That leaves Temple (8-4) as the only FBS team with a legit .500 record or better eligible for a post-season game that doesn't get to play.

That shouldn't exclude them. You're allowed to use 1 D-1AA win, just not two. That's why ASU got left out. The funny thing is, they had San Jose St on the schedule but they backed out and ASU didn't have time to find another FBS school. Like San Jose St would have been any tougher.

I agree alot of the results of the lower bowls don't necessarly reflect if a conference is strong or not. But then again even a BCS Bowl doesn't necessarily reflect that either. Like this year's Fiesta Bowl. I would like to see the BCS add a rule that would eliminate even BCS Conference Champs who are not ranked aka UCONN this season.

As a LSU fan I can relate to a lesser extent how the OK, Nebraska and OK State fans might feel. I personally wasn't happy that LSU got hooked up with a 17th ranked team vs an 8th ranked BCS conference Co-Champ.

I'm not sure what you're referring to.

LSU was in line to play in the Cap One Bowl vs Big Ten Co-Champ Michigan State. Instead Bama got that game.

From what I hear LSU fans and maybe even players and coaches let it be known they prefer LSU to play in the Cotton Bowl. The reasons given were LSU played in last year's Cap One Bowl and the weather & field conditions lacked even though a new turf has been installed. To me that's BS reasoning.

However I do like the idea that LSU will get a chance to play in Jerry's new stadium since they open there next season against Oregon. Dallas also offers much more fertile recruiting ground for the Tigers as well.

Now me, I much prefer a New Year's Day game vs a higher ranked team instead of a Jan 7th date in a somewhat meaningless game.

Now me, I much prefer a New Year's Day game vs a higher ranked team instead of a Jan 7th date in a somewhat meaningless game.

I see.

That said, at this point we have no idea who between MSU and A&M is the better team. We can guess it's MSU, but there's not a whole lot of data to support that. At very least, nothing that shows that they are certainly of different classes. We do have plenty that shows that both UConn and UW are very much not the caliber of OU or NU nor the caliber of any number of other teams they could have/should have played.

anyone know of an huddle pools going on?

I've run one for many years. Has a lot of huddlers in it, but not officially a huddle pool. $20 to get in, pick winners and confidence. Most points wins, pays top 3 spots 60/25/15. Usually have 40-60 players. I can pm you details if you are interested.

winners and confidence. Does that mean you rate your picks 1 for toss-ups and whatever the highest numbers is for games you're certain about the winner? You get the corresponding points for each correct answer?
