detlef
I'm working on a study and am just missing evaluations on 10 teams 1st round draft picks since 2004. In the "Looking For Homers" thread, I got the other 22 covered but went ahead and got the ball rolling on those teams not claimed. The scores listed are merely based on starts and stats and I'm looking for true fans of the teams to edit them as needed. Grade them on a the following scale: 10 Absolute stud. Best 1-2 players in the league at their position 9 Always in the conversation as top 5 or so at position 8 Locked down position has made a pro bowl or two at least 7 Reliable starter but not necc thought of as one of the pillars of the team 6 Most of career as a starter but it's not like the team would ignore the position in coming drafts 5 Very much average. Special team and part time starter 4 Below average. Like 5 only not as good 3 Hanging on to a roster spot. Or a rook or 2nd year player who simply hasn't done jack 2 Had a few OK years but is quite likely out of the game 1 Essentially a bust 0 Colossal bust Things to consider. The younger the player, the more benefit of the doubt. A guy like Sam Bradford certainly gets an extra point considering what he's doing as a rookie on a team that sucked last year. Injuries. If a guy has yet to even see the field yet, just don't grade him. If he was good before he got badly hurt, then grade him what you would have and maybe a .5 pt down. If he never really did jack and then ended his career with an injury, again, rate him basically a bust. So, the teams: Bengals 2004 Chris Perry 3 Still on the team and getting some PT, but hasn't done dick at any point in his career 2005 David Pollack 3 Career ending injury very early but didn't do much in the full season prior to it 2006 Jonathan Joseph 6.5 Has started most of his healthy games and seems to produce. 2007 Leon Hall 7.5 Has started every game since rookie year and gets a decent amount of picks 2008 Keith Rivers 6.5 Has started all but one healthy game but isn't a ton of sacks or tackles 2009 Andre Smith 2.5 All signs lead to bust. Has started the last 3 games though. Benefit of the doubt given it's his second year. 2010 Jermaine Gresham 7 So far so good Colts 2004 No pick 2005 Marlin Jackson 2 Never seemed to do much of anything now on Philly but not playing 2006 Joseph Addai 6 Certainly has been good at times but Colts did have to spend a 1st round pick on a RB 3 years later 2007 Anthony Gonzalez 4 Gets a courtesy point because he's been hurt so much 2008 no pick 2009 Donald Brown 5 Courtesy point because he's still young. Didn't realize how ineffective he's been til I looked at the stats 2010 Jerry Hughes 3 Is not starting and has 3 tackles. If he wasn't a rook, I'd knock him more Cowboys 2004 no pick 2005 DeMarcus Ware 9.5 Among the best in the league at his position essentially from the outset 2005 Marcus Spears 7 Career starter but without many tackles or sacks 2006 Bobby Carpenter 1 On his 3rd team and 5 career starts in 6 seasons 2007 Anthony Spencer 6 Has made his way into the starting line-up in after 2 years of back up and has decent stats 2008 Felix Jones 6 Has trouble staying healthy but dynamic when he's on the field 2008 Mike Jenkins 7 Has started nearly every game since rookie year 2009 no pick 2010 Dez Bryant 9 Already the best WR on the team and dynamic on returns Skins 2004 Sean Taylor 8 Career starter until his murder 2005 Carlos Rogers 7 Has basically started every healthy game after rookie season 2005 Jason Campbell 5 On second team and never exactly caught on 2006 no pick 2007 LaRon Landry 7.5 Career starter who gets his share of tackles 2008 no pick 2009 Brian Orakpo 8.5 Effective pass rusher right from the beginning of his career 2010 Trent Williams 7.5 Has started every game at Tackle. Not sure if he's any good though Jags 2004 Reggie Williams 2 Out of football had flashes in 06 and 07 2005 Matt Jones 2 Showed promise in early years. Already out of football 2006 Mercedes Lewis 7 Has progressed in each year, being named alternate to Pro Bowl in '09 2007 Reggie Nelson 4 Started early years, put up so so stats, then traded and not starting for Cinci 2008 Derrick Harvey 5 Has mostly started and put up rather pedestrian numbers 2009 Eugene Monroe 6 Given every chance but apparently inconsistent so far 2010 Tyson Alualu 7.5 Starter from week one, and putting up nice enough stats
General Itals
Cowboys 2004 no pick 2005 DeMarcus Ware 9.5 Among the best in the league at his position essentially from the outset 9.0. Disappears for games at a time and quit as did the entire defense on Wade Phillips this year. Needs to become a team leader. When he's on, he's all world. 2005 Marcus Spears 7 Career starter but without many tackles or sacks. 6.0. An upgrade is definitely needed. Olshansky has played better than he has. To think we traded the chance to get S. Jax for what would become him and Julius Jones makes me sick. 2006 Bobby Carpenter 1 On his 3rd team and 5 career starts in 6 seasons. Total stiff. 1.0 it is. This is what happens when you take control away from Jerruh and let Bill Parcells have a crack at it. 2007 Anthony Spencer 6 Has made his way into the starting line-up in after 2 years of back up and has decent stats 6.5 Had half a good season last year and if he can play up to that level, he'll be great. Not seeing it this year, though. 2008 Felix Jones 6 Has trouble staying healthy but dynamic when he's on the field. 7.0 Keep him healthy and get him in space and he'll be very good. 2008 Mike Jenkins 7 Has started nearly every game since rookie year 6.0 - Turned it around the middle of last year only to regress horribly this year. 2009 no pick 2010 Dez Bryant 9 Already the best WR on the team and dynamic on returns 7.0 - Let's not annoint him just yet. The injuries have to be a concern also. Edited December 4, 2010 by General Itals

The injuries have to be a concern also. Certainly my 9 for Bryant was not in-line with my description of what a 9 is. That said, 8 is probably fair considering the fact that he's doing all this as a rookie. How 'bout 7.5.
General Itals
I can live with 7.5.

CaptainHook
Colts 2004 No pick(they actually traded back here, and landed Bob Sanders, DPOY in 2007, hurt ever since.) 8 when healthy, which is never, so 6 Made 2 Pro Bowls, 2 All Pros, DPOY, won SB, just injured ever since 2008 2005 Marlin Jackson 2 Never seemed to do much of anything now on Philly but not playing (Marlin Jackson was an above average corner that was versatile enough to play safety. Most famous for intercepting Brady in the AFC Championship to put the Colts in their first SB in Indy. Blew out both knees in practice in back-to-back years.) 6 -injuries killed his career. 2006 Joseph Addai 6 Certainly has been good at times but Colts did have to spend a 1st round pick on a RB 3 years later. (Above average running back. Good receiver, exceptional pass blocker. Just doesn't seem to care. Takes himself out of a lot of games. Has a lot of minor injuries. More of a system back. Now that the offensive line stinks, he's not as good.) 8 he has made a Pro Bowl, tied a SB record for receptions, won a SB, won the title in college, rushed for over 1000 yards . . . 2007 Anthony Gonzalez 4 Gets a courtesy point because he's been hurt so much (Hugh BUST. Worthless. Always hurt. Drops balls.) 1 POS 2008 no pick (Ugh. Traded this pick in the previous years' draft to select Tony Ugoh, who has been the biggest BUST of the Polian era. Absolutely did not care about playing football. Always sat out for minor injuries. Waived in training camp this year. The Colts first pick in this draft was second rounder Mike Pollak C ARZ. He too has been a huge disappointment. Has started a handful of games, but has been beaten out for the starting guard spots late in the last two seasons by undrafted free agents.) Double 00 for Ugoh and Pollak. 2009 Donald Brown 5 Courtesy point because he's still young. Didn't realize how ineffective he's been til I looked at the stats. (Too early to say. I actually think he will be good, the offensive line just stinks so bad, it's hard to tell.) 4 too early 2010 Jerry Hughes 3 Is not starting and has 3 tackles. If he wasn't a rook, I'd knock him more (Haven't seen enough to make a call. Freeney and Mathis aren't getting any younger. He will replace Mathis after his contract expires in 2011.) 3 way too early Edited December 5, 2010 by CaptainHook
detlef
Hook, while your verbal assesment of Addai is spot on, you described a guy who should be a 7 at best. He is not a lock down starter. Also, as nice a pick as sanders is, this is not about how well teams have drafted but about how well players taken at different stages of the first round have done. I just broke it into teams because that would be the best way to solicit grades on the players.

gatorclaws
Bengals 2004 Chris Perry 3 Still on the team and getting some PT, but hasn't done dick at any point in his career 1.5 Hasn't been on the team since 2008. Was a big part of the 2005 team, but often injured and failed as a starter in 2008. could have drafted steven jackson instead. 2005 David Pollack 3 Career ending injury very early but didn't do much in the full season prior to it 3 Could definitely see improvements into a potentially great player at end of year 1, beginning of year 2 but career ended. Would have been rated much higher if he played longer 2006 Jonathan Joseph 6.5 Has started most of his healthy games and seems to produce. 2007 Leon Hall 7.5 Has started every game since rookie year and gets a decent amount of picks 8+ for both. Doesn't meet your pro-bowl standard but both would have if not playing for Cincinnati. Both in the top 5-10 category, both will be franchised tagged over the next 2 years in the absence of a long term deal. I think J.Jo is better but seems to battle more injuries. Leon is ready to play every week. 2008 Keith Rivers 6.5 Has started all but one healthy game but isn't a ton of sacks or tackles 7 above average and a very dependable player, but not a gamechanger like you'd expect from a pick this high 2009 Andre Smith 2.5 All signs lead to bust. Has started the last 3 games though. Benefit of the doubt given it's his second year. 3 talent isn't an issue, but showed up out of shape 2 years in a row and battling injury. Constantly playing catch up. 2010 Jermaine Gresham 7 So far so good 7 looks good, still makes rookie mistakes but could be huge next year
redrumjuice
That's too bad. Shack Harris and his fok ups are well known, Gene Smith is back on track, both Eugene Monroe and Alualu will be 7-8 in a couple more years. Not to mention the middle and later round players. Scooby's Hubby
As a Cowboys fan I must say, "this season sucked" and I say that in past tense b/c it is over. We are a team of deam men walking. 50% of Dallas' roster will be different this time next year.
