hi,

i am setting up our playoff bracket and the first round is easy. 8 vs 1, 7 vs 2, 6 vs 3, and 4 vs 5. but how should round 2 go? the winner of 8 vs 1 plays the winner of 6 vs 3 and the winner of 7 vs 2 play the winner of 4 vs 5? Or do the highest ranked team always play the lowest ranked team left?

thanks

I do it, the highest rank plays the lowest rank always.

In our league...

1-8

4-5

1-8 winner plays the 4-5 winner in second round

3-6

2-7

3-6 winner plays the 2-7 winner in second round

Bracket is set up simliar to NCAA basketball brackets. We do not reseed after each playoff round.

Good to spell that out clearly (with examples) in your constitution so there's no questions/complaints.

I am in leagues that do it both ways, though I don't know why it would not mirror the NFL 100% of the time.

In one of my leagues (3 divisions, 12 team):

1st - BYE

2nd - BYE

3rd - Gets to pick Opponent

4,5,6 - 1 plays 3rd the other two play them selves.

Also, in round two, 1st seed picks his opponent and the remaining 2 teams play each other. This way it is a mini reward for winning the division but not getting 1st round bye. And 1st seed gets a reward for finishing 1st overall in round 2.

Also, we don't mirror NFL 100% of the time because we like to have a little fun. Whatever system works for me as long as it is determined before the draft.

If you hve 6 teams making the playoffs (like another league I'm in), it's easy to mirror the NFL with a bye for the top 2 seeds, and four wildcards. For the league I commish, it's a 14-team league, with a near unanimous vote at the draft for 8 teams. Since we don't want playoffs extending to Week 17, the NCAA bracket format works best.

You can still have the highest ranked team play the lowest ranked team by reseeding after each round to get the same effect. It doesn't have to be the NCAA format to do this.

Agreed. Something that could be thrown out in the off-season and at the next draft when rule changes are discussed. My main point, though, is whatever is agreed to, it should be clearly documented (with examples) in the constituion before the start of the season to avoid questions at this time of the year.
