I asked him about it and he said he believes in the team that got him to the dance, and to the winner goes the spoils. The money is yours and theirs to do what you agree to. You might want to involve a third party or commish for a record of the money agreement. I think he's yanking your chain. ETA: I assume your second post was the prizes as declared by the league rules. So when I make it to the Championship game, I always offer a 70/30 split. Only been turned down once, and I won that year. No way that splitting is cheating, imho. Do what you wanna do.
