Shakenbake
Just curious what Bengals fans think? I was kind of mildly shocked by this, as I thought they may need to go in another direction... LINK The Bengals expect coach Marvin Lewis now will remain in Cincinnati, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The two sides expect to resolve any issues within the next 24 hours. On Monday, Lewis told owner Mike Brown what needs to change for him to consider staying in Cincinnati, where he's had two winning records in eight seasons. The Bengals completed their worst season under Lewis, finishing 4-12 with a loss in Baltimore on Sunday. Lewis: Marriage of Convenience Walker In the end, neither the Bengals nor Marvin Lewis can do better, and that's the reason both parties are expected to extend their sometimes tenuous marriage, James Walker writes. Blog Neither Lewis nor Brown would discuss their meeting. Brown said through a team spokesman that a resolution could come as soon as Tuesday. Lewis wants changes in how the organization operates, including more control over roster decisions. He also has lobbied years for a covered practice field -- the Bengals are the only northern NFL team without one. Lewis turned down an extension last season, saying their differences had to be resolved before he would agree to stay. A 13-7 loss in Baltimore on Sunday ended the final season on his contract. Brown evidently wanted to keep Lewis -- a firing would have happened quickly Monday if the owner wanted change. "I think he wants to be back, and I think everybody wants him back," safety Chris Crocker said. "But it's going to be a decision between him and ownership. One thing is when you lose and you don't have a good season, something changes. You don't know what's going to change." Lewis presided over standard end-of-the-season meetings with players and his assistant coaches Monday, making sure not to tip his hand about his intentions. "He always handles his own business and keeps it to himself," left tackle Andrew Whitworth said. "It really was just a normal exit meeting. He didn't really get on the subject." The Bengals have only two winning records in the 20 years since Brown took over the team. They went 15 years between playoff appearances before Lewis led them to a division title in 2005. He was coach of the year last season for getting the Bengals to the playoffs again. The playoff appearances were more of an anomaly, and Lewis wants to change how the front office works to get the organization on solid footing. The Bengals have never won back-to-back division titles. In most other NFL cities, there would be no discussion of keeping a coach with two winning records in eight seasons. Lewis works for an owner who doesn't like change and was willing to offer him with an extension last year. His overall record in Cincinnati is 60-69-1. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
CaptainHook
I'm surprised he survived as well. How much does Marvin Lewis make? I think finances were a big reason why Del Rio wasn't fired. It may be the case here too.
The Irish Doggy
That, as a team, they failed so miserably this year was a bit shocking. That Mike Brown continues to fail as a GM so miserably is not at all shocking. Until there is a fundamental organizational turn around (new ownership), I doubt anything really changes. The Next Generation
Not so fast: Head coach Marvin Lewis' future with the Bengals is reportedly "in serious jeopardy" after talks broke off Tuesday afternoon. The sides hoped to resolve their issues in two meetings Tuesday morning. Instead, Lewis left the Bengals complex, perhaps never to return. Contrary to previous reports, it's not believed that an indoor facility was a sticking point. The main issue remains owner Mike Brown's bare-bones, throwback approach to staffing and scouting. The Next Generation
OK, so fast: The Bengals announced Tuesday afternoon that Marvin Lewis has agreed to an extension as the team's head coach. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy, the heart of Lewis' disagreement with owner Mike Brown was the change in philosophy and personality last offseason. Lewis apparently wanted to remain a defense/ball control outfit while Brown chased down Terrell Owens and Antonio Bryant to instigate a shift toward a more pass-heavy approach. Lewis wants the front office to find players to suit his philosophy instead of his bending to suit theirs.
CaptainHook
they signed him to an extension?!?! after a 4-12 season?!?!
Savage Beatings
I'm wondering what this means (if anything) for Carson Palmer as well. Not exactly a Pro Bowl season.
wolfer
It mean bye bye Ocho, TO, hello 'run the ball and play defense'. Without a real scouting department this will continue to be easier to say and hard to do. Sorry Bengals fans, you guys really deserve some front office support. Timmypg
I think it means a lockout is coming so bad coaches are keeping their jobs.

CaP'N GRuNGe
How often does a coach finish 4-12 and give a list of demands to an owner as to what it will take to come back and grace the organization with his presence?
muck
1) This is not a fishing trip. 2) Lewis is a 'better than average' head coach. I am not convinced that had Bill Belichick been the HC in Cincinnati over the last 8yrs that he'd have delivered materially different results than Lewis has. Just last year he was the NFL Coach of the Year. The team had a bad season, in part due to the GM (Brown) finding players that did not suit what he wanted to do ... and ... the GM (Brown) bringing in knuckleads. 3) CIN won't do materially better than they have until they get real front-office expertise. The Irish Doggy
It mean bye bye Ocho, TO, hello 'run the ball and play defense'. Actually, the pass game should be pretty good, and it might even be better. Simpson, Caldwell, Shipley at WR and Graham at TE should be capable enough. Local news was reporting that Lewis will now have the authority to hire and fire coaches. That is a good thing. tonorator
Local news was reporting that Lewis will now have the authority to hire and fire coaches. That is a good thing. this is where it needs to start. the single, minimum move that HAS to be done is to get rid of bratkowski. this offense should have been FAR better than it was this year given the talent. next, i would love to see us draft a top QB and have an honest to goodness battle for the job. i believe a big reason why the offense has been so bad is that palmer is now a one-dimensional QB who throws a nice ball, but does nothing else. if the play isn't executed as designed, he's sunk. further, he's become shell-shocked back there and has lost his aggressiveness. with no one to push him, he can stay this way. as far as marvin, any other franchise would have fired him by now. unfortunately, for the ownership of this team, mediocrity is acceptable. Capt. Stanky
Marvin Lewis isn't the problem. The Bengals are run like a family business. Mike Brown makes a pretty penny for the family regardless of if the team wins or loses. The thing that scares me more than anything is that Mikey finally made some moves and spent some money this off season. How did that work out? This team doesn't have a chance until the team is either sold or Mikey dies. The latter is more likely. I can only hope his daughter has half a clue. It sucks being a Bungles fan
