Akfatha
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6004943 Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract voided and he will be allowed to become a free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, according to an NFL Players Association document. AFC West blog Williamson ESPN.com's Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog. • Blog network: NFL Nation Asomugha’s deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 -- and he didn'’t. His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn’t achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player. To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009. He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn't have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season. He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.

ebartender
He'd look good in green opposite Samuel. I know he is a great cover corner but can he tackle? Can the Eagles really afford two non-tacling corners to go along with a horrible tackling saftey in Mikell?

You don't get to even attempt a tackle if teams don't throw at you and teams rarely throw at Nnamdi. One other thing should be pointed out is that Nnamdi is one helluva guy too...no thugish baggage etc Edited January 9, 2011 by keggerz

Money I would guess, rather than trying to get away. Isn't a franchise tag worth only the average of the top 5 earners at that position? Asomugha's agent probably figured he'd get top dollar if not franchised.

kpholmes
Whatever happens in the future, today is a very sad day in my books: Nnamdi Asomugha is my all-time favorite Oakland Raider/Cal Bear. He's not going anywhere. Al Davis will make him the highest paid DB once again...Sorry Revis!!! I have to think (hope) there's some truth to this. While Nnamdi has publicly expressed disappointment in the organization in the past, he has also been one of the most encouraging during the team's turnaround. Part of the reason his last contract was so short was because he wanted to get out if things didn't turn around, and Al Davis said "Fine - but I'll show you that in three years it will be a different franchise and you'll want to stay" I think if Hue Jackson is in fact hired, and John Marshall stays on as defensive coordinator, Asomugha will be inclined to finish what he's started. He's has spent his entire career in the Bay Area, as a Cal Bear and a Raider. All of his charity work is done through the Bay, and I have a hard time thinking he wants to leave. Does Nnamdi want a ring? Absolutely. But he knows it will be 10x better if he gets it with the Raiders than if he moves to a team that's already contenting. My guess - Al Davis makes him the highest paid corner in the NFL, and gives him a contract he can retire on. I know he is a great cover corner but can he tackle? Can the Eagles really afford two non-tacling corners to go along with a horrible tackling saftey in Mikell? He's physical, has no problem hitting people. Used to constantly have to make up for the lack-luster front 7 by taking down the big backs of the AFC West in the secondary. One other thing should be pointed out is that Nnamdi is one helluva guy too...no thugish baggage etc Superb citizen, runs his own charities, works with the Clintons and has dedicated his entire life to giving back to the Bay Area community. Just a fantastic human being.

It certainly gives the player all the power though. The Raiders are powerless at this point.

If he reached his incentives, his salary this year (which was considered an option) would pay him the cost of a quarterback franchise tag. The option was for Nnamdi and his piggy bank, the incentives were so Al Davis wasn't blowing more money. The clause about not being able to franchise him was simply so Al Davis couldn't pay him top DB money if he was scheduled to pay him top QB money this season. kpholmes
By the way, ONE interception or ONE sack by Asomugha would have kept the contract from being voided, and earned him a 16.8 Million salary. No matter how you look at it, the Raiders are in trouble this offseason and are going to have to find a way to shell out cash. Asomugha, Huff, Routt, Seymour, Gallery, Miller, Bush, and Gradkowski are all free agents.

kpholmes
They HAVE to franchise Seymour right? Otherwise that trade was HORRIBLE . . . Yes and no. Seymour really liked what the Marshall did with the defense this year - a heavy rotation along the line that kept everyone fresh. Seymour knows that this kind of scheme could really extend his career as he begins to get up there in age. With this and Seymour's family in mind - who have already relocated to the Bay Area, I think there's a good chance he'll re-sign on his own. I think the Raiders are much more likely to use their franchise tag on Miller or Bush if they can't agree on a long term contract; Al Davis values Bush at a 2nd round pick, maybe higher this season. He knows that keeping Bush is pivotal with DMC's injury problem. And it's no secret that Zach Miller is one of the top 10 TEs in the league in terms of receiving ability+protection. You don't think Michael Bush is interested in testing the market? Seeing if he can compete for a starting gig? Sure, McFadden hasn't proven to be durable, but Bush knows he'll never be the guy in Oakland as long as McFadden is there. I thought I had read somewhere that Bush wants a larger role than what he'll get in Oakland... ETA - Reread and saw you were referring to a franchise tag. I think that's the only way Bush stays in Oakland. Edited January 9, 2011 by MTSuper7

I think that's the only way Bush stays in Oakland. There aren't too many teams in need of a designated runner...Buffalo, Miami, Cincinati, Indy, Washington, Green Bay and New Orleans...I doubt he would like to go to Buffalo with them drafting Spiller...Miami and Cincinati could lose thier featured RB's...I'm not too sure if Shanahan would go fo Bush in Washingon. He seems content with Torain...That leaves Indy, Green Bay, and New Orleans...all of which would be a great fit for his running style...Indy will probaby lose Addai and Mike Hart is injury prone. Same thing in Green Bay and New Orleans...Is Ryan Grant fully healed from the ankle injury? The Saint could let Pierre Thomas walk and Bush could benifit in that offense...my guess if he doesn't stay in Okland is I dy, Green Bay or New Orleans...although I hope he stays!!!
