Cam Newton media workout today

Scheduled at 1pm EST at Catheral Catholic High School here in San Diego. I tried to find the location all day yesterday 'cause I wanted to see if I could sneak a peak. Gathering information on potential draft picks via the web is great and all...watching clips on youtube and what not is great and all. But I'll be damned if all I wanted to do was get an up close and personal view of somebody this year. I inquired about public access and was told there would be none. Newton is apparently on top of 6 teams QB chart...I don't see the hubbub. Whatever.....

He's a good quarterback, that could really excel with the right coaching. He also has something that few Nfl QB's have which is charisma. He would help a team on and off the field.

I'm having a more difficult time assessing Newton than I have just about any player I can remember. I believe he "gets it". I see good leadership, good football instincs, a desire to work hard and win, etc. Obviously there are tons of physical tools here. Will he be able to refine his footwork and deliver the ball accurately and on time? Usually in cases like his, I say no, but something is telling me that this kid might be "special".

Off the field issues are too much for me. Pass, sorry.

Trent Dilfer called Newton's workout "phenomenal" and added if scouts saw the workout, they would have been slobbering. Ummm...sure thats great and all but who doesn't excel in a controlled environment?

Cecil Newton is not going away once Cam gets to the NFL.

If I were an owner, or especially a coach - I would want nothing to do with this kid or his family.

But he hired Bus Cook as his agent and he's one of the best at handling adversity, issues, circuses, etc. Don't you remember how he had all of the Favre offseason stuff controlled and barely in the news?

I'm not so worried about the off-field stuff. His parents took money and he has a jerk for a dad. I'm sure there are HUNDREDS of NFL players in the exact same boat that didn't get caught. If Cam seemed like an a-hole about the whole thing, I might feel differently. I'd be much more concerned over the issues of a guy like Mallett.

Taz, some guys really excel in that environment, to the point where there literally aren't any incomplete passes. Still, there have been guys over the years that have had less than stellar pro days, Dan LeFevour most recently, who saw his rising star fall quickly. Wait for one Jake Locker, for example. If guys can't throw, they can't throw, no matter how much you try to help them look good.

Dilfer is usually pretty tough on guys. He does tend to swing and miss quite a bit, but I do typically respect his analysis.

Well the media is going all Lady GAGA on his "workout". Nothing short of a high profile reel tape if you ask me. Kinda Lebron James if you ask me. He's not gonna win over the public with stunts like this. I watched some of the work out via another feed and his 3 step drop was all over the place. He didn't have balance and was throwing off his heel. Needs ALOT of work and I would say more so than Tebow at this point. Accuracy is fantastic but he only threw 5 routes in the medium range. Another thing I noticed is that when rushed (they had some token guy rushing him), he would escape to the left every time and was slow to replant and deliver.

The kid is talented...there are no if and but's about it. But I'm still not buying all the hype.

Since I have him on ignore, let me guess. Some sort of insult?

No, you are just clueless everything football. You are also posting quite a bit lately, lots of free time or something?

Cam Newton aces workout in San Diego

“I was surprised how refined he is for being such a puppy. I would have forgiven a lot of little errors; I would have forgiven a lot of sloppiness. But you didn’t have to because you didn’t see a lot of it. … If this is his starting point, the ceiling is so high I don’t even know where to begin.”

Taking snaps from center, Newton was not perfect, but he had long stretches of virtually flawless mechanics in terms of his feet and follow-through. At 6-6 and pushing 260 pounds, his ability to move and make strong throws, even off-balance, was most impressive.

...his accuracy in the drill was perhaps the most impressive part of the workout.

That sounds exactly like what you said.

Needs ALOT of work and I would say more so than Tebow at this point.
Yep, total moran.

Yep..sure does sound like what I said. Wonder what the time stamp on that article you found is.

Dude...seriously. Let it go. You are not worth my time. And yes, lots of time on my hands. Does that get your dick hard that some people are out of work? Your shtick is getting old... and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that assumption. You were banned for a reason. The phishing trips are old news H8  Go find another poster to stalk. Bye bye now. Back to ignore.

Mike Mayock on Cam Newton's Media Day: "I'd offer one cautionary note: JaMarcus Russell had the best Pro Day I ever saw."

Cam has also said he isn't sure if he'll attend the Combine or not, which Mayock said would be a huge mistake.

Newton might have H8tank and the rest of the world fooled, but I'll stay off the bus with Mayock and Taz, thanks.

He looks pretty natural as a QB. That just might end up being the thing that allows him to adjust his game to become a passer. If he becomes a classroom guy, I think he has a chance. It just looks right. With Vick, Young, Tebow & Kordell, something just didn't look right. You doubt their accuracy on just about every pass they make. Locker is the same way. Newton looks like he is going to complete the pass right out of his hand more often than not. I don't know anywhere near enough about the kid's personality to give him a true endorsement one way or the other, but I'm officially gonna go on record as saying that if he has an elite QB type work ethic, he's going to be a dandy. That is a HUUUGGGEEE "if", but I think there is some potential there.

Geez, how cool is the competetion for quarterback at the combine going to be?? There are going to be 8-10 QB's basically competing for millions of dollars over the course of a weekend. A lot of them are big names too. It will be cool to see how they stack up against their less heralded challengers.

Jake Locker has way more balls than he does brains, so there is no way he isn't going, but I'm afraid that his trend of losing 100,000 per pass this season is going to continue through the combine.

This made me chuckle

Cam Newton impressed assembled media at his workout or, at least Trent Dilfer, whose praise was effusive. Dilfer called his performance “phenomenal” and said “if scouts saw this, they’d be slobbering.” Though, there is only so much you can tell from a workout. Though Dilfer is smitten, Cam wants a different Super Bowl winning quarterback to mentor him, Brett Favre.

The old gunslinger was the reason Newton chose Bus Cook as his agent. He hopes Favre will work with him before the combine and the NFL Draft.

“When Brett Favre came into the meeting room as I was trying to decide which agent I was going to select, I seen Brett and Brett’s calling me by my name, and I was like wow,” Newton said while appearing on “NFL Total Access” on NFL Network. “It’s unheard of and it’s a dream come true just to be acknowledged and being able to talk and call Brett any time I feel like.”

Favre should offer the young quarterback some sage advice about succeeding in the NFL. Peter King likes his family dinner anecdotes heart-warming. Check down receivers are, in fact, for pansies. When you sexually harass team employees at 25, you are an impish rascal. When you’re still doing it in your 40s, you are old and creepy.

Be wary of his text messages.

 Run Cam Run!!

I remember a few years ago. Same type of scenario. Guy coming out with incredible talent but also with stories of character issues. Still, it was the NFL now and he was going to be the next uber-star player at his position. Media was drooling all over him because of his certain future greatness. No one could possibly pass him up. He was going to change the game.

How's Reggie Bush doing as that uber-RB?

I don't follow college ball, so I don't know much about this newton kid, but when I hear certain people who should have a pretty good idea about what he might be able to do, then you have some 'person' saying he needs more work than jesusTebow, it makes me LAUGH OUT LOUD.

You are not worth my time.

Your actions show otherwise.

while that vague description fits reggie bush, it also fits any number of perennial pro-bowlers, hall of famers, etc.

you guys are killing me with this "the better he looks in workouts, the more he will suck in the NFL" crap. so you're wary of the guy, that's fine, you probably have good enough reasons to be. but trying so hard to turn any positive into a negative makes it look like you have an axe to grind and objectivity is out the window.

I don't think anyone is saying that. Mayock was basically saying that Russell had the best pro day he's ever seen and he was a complete bust so before anyone watches a MEDIA workout and proclaims he'll be phenomenal, they just need to keep some things in check. Could Newton be a future star and pro bowler? Of course. Could he be all hype and never make the transition? Of course.
