I have been hunting for the Founder's Breakfast Stout.

 

I had a Mayflower Imperial Stout last night.

 

I have a pretty good supply in the fridge. Picked up a bottle of Imperial Stout Trooper last night. Have several bottles of Hopping Frog (Boris, Doris, and Barrel Aged Boris), a bottle of Goose Island Bourbon aged stout, A Smuttynose Baltic Porter, a few others...more than I can recall off the top of my head.

 

This is a newly developed weakness.

That's a great effing beer. I'm usually not a huge fan of smoked beers because they tend to get over-powered by the smoke. However, because that one is a Baltic Porter, it's got enough to carry the smoke. Hands down my favorite smoked beer of any kind.

 

We're actually doing a dinner with Left Hand tonight. That beer is not on the menu but I've got some bottles around. I'll probably feature it as an add-on for anyone who wants it.

 

Looks like a great line-up in general.

thanks Det, that just reaffirms my desire to try it. My coworker had it and can't stop raving.

I'm about ready to head out to get my fill of a few of these.

Testimony to it's deliciousness, I was handed one outside on a very hot day recently. My first thought was, "Do I really want a smoked Baltic Porter right now?" Of course, I wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. It was lovely.

We did have a cask conditioned keg of New Holland's Poet, which was awesome.

I also had an Old Rasputin, a Lagunita's Dogtown Pale Ale and one other that I can't remember

$3 per pint

Last night's dinner really reminded me that I need to give Lefthand more credit than I typically have.

 

Years ago, I tried the Juju Ginger and Polestar Pilsner, neither of which knocked me out. But Wake Up Dead and Fade to Black are effing awesome, as was the Twin Sisters DIPA. The Sawtooth was a solid session ale and I really dug the basic Porter. The dude from the brewery was also very cool and knew his chight.

Russian Imperial stouts are not very easy to find, but I have never had a bad one, it's a rather unique style... and now to brag a bit... in the only homebrewing beer contest I ever entered which had over 300 entries, I took the top award for a Russian Imperial, the brewer's choice award, selected by the brew master of the Blue Point brewery. I broke all the rules with that recipe. Chocolate, roasted and black patent barely's were all used in the malt bill. All the brew recipe books said never combine all 3. The recipe was brewed in a brew pub called the Brickhouse in Patchouge NY, by the Blue Point brew masters, and served in the pub. That was part of "winning" the award, to have a recipe commercially brewed.

 

It was all the more impressive in that they like to select a more "mainstream" style if they are going to brew up a full batch like that. It had a heavy roasted coffee flavor, hihg alc content (required for the style). I've never tried a Russian Imperial I didn't like. It just so happens mine was the best I ever drank! :wacko:

 

I haven't done any brerwing in over 5 years, I really have to get my system back up and running... 20 gallon batches. $300 in high temp hoses and odds and ends, and I can get it going again. I tried to sell my SS fermenters here recently, but the interested paryties declined, maybe it's a message from God....

The best RIS's come from your guys neck of the woods so to speak. I've judged quite a few, drank many more and Three Floyd's Vanilla Bean Aged Dark Lord or Portsmouth Kate The Great can't be beat for that style. Kate is my winner just because it is easier for me to get. The Dark Lord though was fantastic the few times I was lucky enough to get/taste it

Dark Lord is damn near impossible to get.

 

My chef somehow knows the guys and is getting me a 6 pack. :wacko:

I was at the Mendocino Brewery where they make Red Seal and had their 12 beer sampler . . some very good and some ehhh . . beers.

 

Went to a local place in Napa called Downtown Joes and had their sampler with Sunday C oach potatoes and alchico. They had a Porter that was simply outstanding, as well as an Irish red and double IPA that were fantastic.

Got a bottle of Rogue John John Dead Guy Ale today from a coworker. Rogue did a special series of their beers that were aged in whiskey barrels. Their brewmaster and spirits master are both named John, hence the name. The cool thing for me is the label of the one I received shows both John's in Carhartt overalls. Haven't had the beer yet.
