IDP Rookie Rankings

Recommended Posts

1. Robert Quinn (DE - STL): Good pass rusher lands on a team with some need and a defensive/pass rush genius. Spags has mentioned they'll bring Quinn along slowly, but Quinn's the kind of athlete that they'll want on the field from the get-go. Pairing with a hopefully-improving Chris Long on the other end could mean good things for a much-maligned Ram defense.

2. Jabaal Sheard (DE - CLE): As of the very early press date of our post-draft preview, Sheard looked to be part of a somewhat-muddled Cleveland DL. The 2010 Big East Player of the Year is all but penciled in as a starting end now, though, which makes him a solid dynasty choice, and perhaps even a redraft-worthy pick. Heck, if the Tampa Bay DE duo situation scares you off a bit, Sheard could be considered the second-best DL in this class. EDIT: With the Tampa Bay DE situation being murky, it might be prudent to go with the guy getting the opportunity from day one.

3. DaQuan Bowers (DE - TBB): Supposedly the microfracture surgery was a "minor" one, and he's already working out, making football moves. Whether the knee will be tested at full strength come training camp (whenever that is) is the big question. He slipped big time in this draft because of big time concerns over the knee. He could turn out to be a steal for the Bucs and potentially your fantasy squad. Most of you reading this are likely in dynasty leagues; why not stash him on your DTS and hope for the best?

4. Adrian Clayborn (DE - TBB): Even if Bowers' knee holds up, Clayborn could have value as well. The only entrenched starter is Stylez White and he's on the downside of his career. Clayborn, like Bowers, is an excellent pass rusher, but was brought in to help in run defense as well. If Bowers' knee lends you to balk, Clayborn is far safer.

5. Nick Fairley (DT - DET): I think the Lions got a steal where they got Fairley, and will eventually plug him in next to Ndamukong Suh for a potentially lethal 1-2 inside punch for the Lion D. Questions remain about his work ethic, but he definitely has a high motor and could benefit from defenses having to key on Suh. The best DT option for leagues that split up DE and DT.

6. Cameron Jordan (DE - NOS): Not to be confused with the Cleveland TE, Jordan Cameron. How odd will it be if one tackles the other? Anyways, I like where Jordan landed here, but wasn't too high on him coming out of Cal. Gregg Williams will work on his aggressiveness and he'll be used as a situational pass-rusher in Alex Brown's stead to start out with.

7. Marcell Dareus (DT - BUF): Dareus is skilled enough to move around along the Bill DL, although he may not line up outside as a true pass-rusher, but has the ability to rush the passer from anywhere. I love this kid's story, and will make an immediate impact. Those in "start-DT" leagues should look Dareus' way for sure.

8. J.J. Watt (DE - HOU): I wasn't thrilled with this pick by the Texans. They had glaring needs/holes at other defensive positions when they pulled Watt off the board. That said, I suppose he fills a need with the Texans' likely switch to the 3-4. Pickin's start to get slim down at the end of the top-10.

9. Stephen Paea (DT - CHI): A workout warrior with a huge chance to make an immediate impact on a defense that sorely misses beef and nastiness in the middle. His ceiling may not be as high as the "Big 2" tackles, but you'll get him far, far later and it could definitely pan out.

10. Cameron Heyward (DE - PIT): Ironhead's kid couldn't be more pleased where he ended up, and will get a shot at significant playing time with an older and oft-injured pair of ends ahead of him. He'll fit in nicely with the Steeler scheme, although his fantasy production has a lower ceiling.

10-tie. Ryan Kerrigan (DE? - WAS): Listed as LB on a few depth charts, Kerrigan joins Brian Orakpo as a nice edge rusher who will make use of his DL/LB hybrid talents. Based on his "situational" status, he's really just a project, but has some upside.

NOTE: Aldon Smith was left off this list, as he was a hybrid DL/LB's to begin with, and MyFantasyLeague lists him as a LB.

Kerrigan is listed as a DE at MFL

 I coulda sworn he was LB in an earlier dynasty draft of mine. I know a couple depth chart sources listed him as LB.

Since I'm assuming a good percentage of readers here use MFL, I'll make an edit to the list. Thanks!

Move Sheard up to 1a because he's likely to start immediately and has enough talent to generate some numbers, and switch Fairley (even though he's a DT he's got some real ability and Suh is going to draw a tremedous amount of attention and I don't think the DET vets are going to tolerate a lot of slacking) with Clayborn (I think Bowers in the regular here but the knee issue prevents me from moving him all the way up to 1b with Quinn and Sheard, and Clayborn will share more reps because of White) and you've pretty much got my list.

I have a feeling Kerrigan ends up listed as a LB by the time it is said & done, which will kill his value. Liuget intrigues me and I think he'll be a decent producer at the NFL level. He could creep into the end of lists with good reason.

Lot of potentially very good scoring DEs ended up as 5 techniques.

Yeah Sheard flew up my board. His offseason elbow surgery and what appeared to be a somewhat crowded group of DLs gave me pause, but apparently the surgery went well and he's experiencing zero pain. And the Brownies obviously love him since he's penciled in as the starter. Supposedly he'll switch from side to side. Not sure what I think about that.

Agree on the Clayborn/Bowers thoughts.

Agree on the Kerrigan mention.

Not sure about Liuget. He's a pass-rusher who projected better in a 4-3, and really, when has any Charger DL been of any value? Maybe I'm having a brain fart. But hey, he's listed as a DT, so in leagues that start DT, he's definitely worth a flyer.

You read my mind.
