WaterMan
The defenseless receiver rule: This will help slow injuries, but I'm going to miss the big hits where a QB leaves his receiver out to dry. IMO, the Patriots will be the last great defense. Edited May 23, 2011 by WaterMan
DallasMothership
The defenseless receiver rule: This will help slow injuries, but I'm going to miss the big hits where a QB leaves his receiver out to dry. IMO, the Patriots will be the last great defense. I like big hits, but seeing a receiver get demolished when he doesn't even see it coming makes me cringe. It's the same as dudes who sucker punch people. It's somewhat cowardly. Football is inherently physical and brutal. The game shouldn't allow or promote cheap shots. Skippy
One way or the other they are going to try to drive scoring up as that is what sells. People love to see 80 yard TD's. The only person that loves to see that 40 yard deep ball crushed by a defender is the fans of the team that the defender plays for. Offense sells. Being a fan of a true defensive football team, I think this is going to really hurt defensive minded teams. They will adjust and play within the letter of the rule but that split second of having to pause is going to make a hugh difference IMO. WaterMan
The more they turn the league into a girl scout flag football game, the less money they are going to make. The NFL is really wanting to close their doors for good.
flemingd
Protecting people against potentially debilitating injuries and long-term consequences is just common sense. I don't think anyone enjoys reading about Mike Webster slobbering all over himself the last few painful years of his tragically shortened life or Dave Duerson eating his gun at age 50. In the past 20 years ago they changed the rules to prevent head slaps and going after guys' knees - how many people even notice it now? The game has continued to evolve and grow in spite of making it safer. The more we learn and understand the clearer it becomes that maximum prevention is necessary. These aren't broken bones that will heal or snapped ligaments that can be pulled from pig cadavers. These are brains that cannot be repaired or rehabilitated. How anyone can be critical of proecting someone's brain is ludicrous. IT'S YOUR BRAIN Not long ago everyone smoked and no one thought twice about it. 20 years of research later you're a donkey it you smoke. I am all in favor of the rules. They don't prevent hitting defenseless receivers, they prevent contact to the head/neck area of a defenseless receiver and that's 100% necessary.. CaptainHook
Using your helmet as a weapon was never meant to be a part of football. I'm glad they are getting rid of it.
