San Diego WR situation

This is something I'm monitoring closely as I play in a deep dynasty league. With Floyd a free agent and the possibility of VJ being traded circulating, who would step in to be the number 1 if they were to both go? It seems that offense has a knack for plugging people into that position and getting huge numbers out of them. The 3 candidates would be: Buster Davis (who has been a bust himself so far, largely because of injuries), Seyi Ajirotutu, and Legedu Naanee. All 3 seem to have the potential to excell if given that opportunity. I'm leaning towards Naanee myself.

You would think the Chargers would have better WRs for Rivers or at least a plan to seriously upgrade the roster at the WR position. The Chargers have really changed over the last 3 years offensively and defensively, once Pro Bowl names all over the roster; now the weight is greatly on the shoulders of Rivers to do more with less.

This is going to sound nuts, but I'm liking Kelley Washington's chances as a come-from-nowhere darkhorse in this competition. The guys who have been on the roster sitting below Jackson have all had ample opportunity to step into the WR2 role - SD was begging any one of them to seperate themselves and they simply weren't capable for one reason or another.

Last year Washington showed up late and despite that managed 13 catches in 14 targets. That's the kind of stuff QBs love, and Rivers is certainly a good enough QB to make his WRs better (something else that makes me wonder about SD's other guys).

Just something nagging at me with this guy. I'm wondering is he isn't the next guy to have a Brandon Lloyd-like epiphany and suddenly become a viable WR. Not predicting Lloyd type numbers, but there just might be some there, there.

If it had been a few years ago I'd be with you Bronco, but it's hard for me to imagine the lights suddenly going on for Washington at 32 years of age. Lloyd was 29 last year, anyways.

If the lights were to suddenly go on for anybody in the group I would think it would be former first rounder Buster Davis, who, while its true has been a bust thus far, did enter the NFL originally at only 21 years old, is still only 25 to this day, has had to contend with multiple injuries and has probably the best physical abilities of the bunch, with a size and speed combo that is similar to Mike Wallace. Although its true he was accomplishing a whole lot of nothing last year prior to his groin injury.

Shoot if Rivers were to lose them both he'd have to throw to SOMEBODY else. Unless he plans to target Gates 20 times a game, which, as a dynasty owner of gates I would be perfectly fine with.

BB's comments about Washington are good ones. I know most people are underwhelmed by Patrick Crayton, but he's still in the mix as far as I know.

Why? He's talented, but it's hard for me to believe that Steve Smith isn't done as anything other than a possession type receiver at this point in his career. He's only 5'9 to begin with and in his career has been a star largely as a result of his explosive speed. Now he's 32 years old, I can't imagine that he hasn't lost some of that explosive ability that helped him separate himself from the pack a few years ago.

While true, he hasn't had much of a chance QB wise lately and a couple of injuries slowed him as well. If Crayton can step up why can't Smith. If all he has is possession type skills left (I think he has more), he'd still be an upgrade. So Brown, Smith, Crayton, Washington and Gates. If Floyd stays then it's a bonus. Throw in Ajiritutu or Nanee and it's workable. I guess it will come down to Floyd really. Either way we've never had a reliable speed burner WR since what? Wes Chandler or Alworth? Norv has been down this road before.

Of course the over-riding factor for any of this is AJ Smith. I have zero confidence in his ability to make this a SB contender. In fact, he's done more to dismantle what was thought as the most talented football team multiple years running, into a team out of the playoffs. Its been sad to watch yet AJ Smith is still getting lauded for his Rivers/Manning trade. Time to let go.

 Ok but you might not like it:

V.Jackson: The Vikings offered Vincent Jackson a two-year, $18 million contract before last year's tradeline only to fail to satisfy the Chargers' demands for compensation. When Judge Nelson ruled in favor of the players to lift the lockout, she cited the offer as a primary factor. The Vikes were willing to pay Jackson $18 million. Instead, the Chargers opted to keep him on their roster at less than $600,000 for 2010, which was a striking example of "irreparable harm." If AJ Smith is offered a 2nd round pick plus a "conditional", V-Jax is as good as gone. We won't see him in a Charger uniform in 2012 regardless. Its sad really. Smith's "I am the lord of the Chargers" attitude is systematically tearing this team apart.

M.Floyd: Apparently, re-signing Floyd is on of the Chargers priorities this year. It will remain to be seen what sort of FA Floyd will get out of the new CBA. At 29, this is Floyd's lottery year for a big contract. He'll garner alot of interest from other teams and depending on the compensation they will receive by losing him, he co\uld also be gone.

L.Naanee: The Chargers did not tender him this season. He'll be an UFA after the lockout so kiss his 23 receptions and 1 TD goodbye. Plus he was arrested this year for public intox and something else...whatever....good riddance.

Ajirotutu : I like this kid. He's only 24 and stepped in admirably last season. He'll likely be only a 4th WR this year but he has a bright future but is only signed through this year. We could lose him next year as well.

Crayton: He's 32 this year and has clearly lost any resemblance of WR that can contribute. He'll see spot duty but he was signed due to the V-Jax holdout and injuries.

Washington: Kelley was a mid-season sign due to the injury bug as well. He's nothing more than a special teamer this late in his career.

Buster Davis: Bust....moving on.

Vincent Brown: Finally...something to be excited about. He was touted as one of the drafts best route runners. He'll be groomed as the long term #2 WR for the Bolts.

Steve Smith: hahaha...yeah I am hoping here but if V-Jax is traded, Smith could step in as the #1 in a heartbeat. I think he was decimated by extremely bad QB play the past 2 seasons. Although Carolina has one of the best run blocking OL's in the NFL, when they go into passing mode, they are ranked #30th in pass protection and gave up the 3rd highest amount of sacks in the NFL. Of course Clausen was no Newton. Ya know, the next big thing.

At any rate, there ya have it. I told you it would not be rosy. And yet, Rivers will still be among the top QB's this year. Go figure huh? Yeah AJ Smith, you just keep going on with your bad self...you stud.

Agreed about VJ, Brown and Davis. Floyd, Washington and Crayton could surprise with Rivers distributing the ball and Norv accenting the ground game. We'll know soon enough. As for the rest...Meh.

It's hard for me to believe the Chargers would shed both Floyd and Jackson at once... you really see this happening?

I spose if they see Gates as a #1 receiver equivalent... even so, that's a big drop in talent and shock to the receiving corp all at once for a team that's interested in contending for a championship in the present.

Anthony Miller?

 yeah like 20 years.

Buster Davis was suppose to be that guy and we all know how that worked out. Steve Smith can be that guy even at his age. Who I would LOVE for them to target would be James Jones. THAT would make me smile.

Not that he wouldn't want Stv Smth, but I think Rivers prefers a bigger target like VJax. You could probably get Santana Moss cheaper if you wanted small and speedy; I like a Sidney Rice for San Diego.

I like Rice as well, but if Smith won't pony up the cash for V-Jax, there is no way he will agree to the demands of Rice. Especially since Rice had hip surgery last year. Injury + high contract demand = nope.

I think they look for a mid-tier FA. Breaston or James Jones could be very interesting. I also believe Santana Moss is a FA and if so he'd be another good fit.

i'm not a fan of Breaston but am very high on James Jones. Moss will cost too much.
