julio jones vs aj green(not making sense to me)

Recommended Posts

havent been around in awhile...so forgive me if this has been discussed alot

but i cant figure out why most sites have green ranked ahead of jones....usually by at least 10 spots....the huddle has green 20 spots ahead of jones in redraft format as do many other sites

you probably havent seen a rookie wr, with the talent of jones, coming into as good of a situation in quite some time....this team is loaded with ryan, roddy, gonzo, turner, and julio...they moved up for julio because it primes them to make superbowl runs right now...not only that but with ryan, roddy, and julio still being young they have key pieces to build around for years....they are probably transforming into a pass first team.....in my league where i have to start 4wr(wr/te combos)....im seeing julio has being a guy that i could probably get as my 4th starter.....he might not produce...but if i land him, as that, on draft day im going to be happy

i know coming into the draft green was regarded the better propsect....better hands and concentration...green is a talent....and i understand the thinking that hes a number 1 in cincy....and jones is a 2 in atlanta....but i think id rather have the two in atls offense(who has the ability and talent to be a 1)..than the 1 in cincy.....especially facing the probability that dalton is starting in cincy this year...i definitley love jones over green.....i think if you told me palmer was going to start 16 games in cincy this year i might feel the same way....and that looks like a long shot....

just about every site is doing...im just not sure how you rank aj green 21 spots higher than julio jones right now in a redraft...i suspect that if you draft in late august or early september(ill be drafting sept 1st)....julios stock will be making a jump....he looks likes a great value right now where he ranked and going in mocks

First, where he lands is great - in a year or two. Once he learns the ropes and Gonzo retires I think he could become a beast in that offense at least to the extent of being a #2 WR in an offense that is not as pass heavy as it could be. Think about Boldin in ARZ who had a few good years there along with Fitz but he never exceeded what Fitzgerald could do and that was in a pass happy offense with nearly no vestige of a running game or decent defense. Any rookie has to be taken warily this year since they have not been learning the play book or getting chemistry with the QB.

Green in CIN may have no one else to compete against. CIN will need to throw and may not be able to run that well depending on what happens with Benson.

Any rookie is scary this year since they have zero development so far. Landing on a team that does not need the player as much like ATL makes even a talented kid like Jones less appealing than Green in CIN to me. That may change dramatically next year, but for 2011 I am honestly going to think long and hard before I use a draft pick on a rookie WR in a redraft league.

Even Greg Little? I am most definitely in the minority, but I'll take Little ahead of Jones in a redraft and maybe ahead of AJ Green as well. I'd be very pleased to land Little as a 4th/5th WR in a 14+ team league.

i like what you had to say and agree with most of it...some good points...but jones doesnt have to have a larry fitz year or better to justify anything....if he has 1000 yards and 8-9 tds this year hed exceed his ADP right now right? that would be considered a boldin type of year no? and jones probably compares better to fitz than boldin anyway

but i dont agree that atl doesnt "need" jones...if they didnt feel he was going to have an impact i doubt they would have given up what they did....superbowls arent easy to win....an injury or two....a dropped ball or a fumble...a penalty or a bad call...is all it takes to derail months worth of work trying to get there......they are going for it now...jones has already been working closely with ryan(or so its been reported)....dunno if ive heard about green working with dalton much...or at all......the falcons are going for it...and sooner or later teams are going to have to try to stop roddy from having his way.....and jones will be working on corners he should have some great physical advantages over

i know all about rookie wrs....or being wary of drafting any rookie with the situation right now....im just saying...i dunno about ranking green 21 spots ahead of jones right now in redraft...given the team and qb situations...and the fact that jones has been working with ryan already quite a bit

Green has the talent of Jones AND the polish that Jones doesn't have yet. Dude is an absolute natural. Those guys rise to the top sooner than later. He's probably not Calvin or Fitz, but he's just a half notch below in terms of raw ability. Jones automatically can do no better than 3rd on that team in terms of targets. Green figures to be no worse than 2nd on his team. Jones may have a hard time catching more than 50 balls in that offense, while Green figures to do that almost automatically. Jones may be more important as a deep threat on a great offense, but Green figures to be relied on constantly. Just my 2 pesos.

Even though Green's supporting cast isn't going to be nearly as good, an ultra-talented #1 target on any team can be a good bet to surpass their ADP when they're going that low. Yes, you could have a situation like Fitz last year where the QB play hurts him (and yes with a weaker supporting cast) but Fitz still caught 100 balls because he was the focal point of their gameplan, and AJG isn't going to cost nearly that much for what you might get out of him (a decently high floor with upside).

On the other hand, out of all of the rookies, the only one who's gotten glowing praise so far for his progress and also his route-running is Julio. I really do feel that he will be able to have near-immediate impact for this team, but what impact will that be? Opening up things for Roddy, Tony G, the other targets and the running game, or will they open things up more for him? Maybe it's the latter sometimes, but it isn't going to immediately change Ryan's trusted first and second looks when he needs to make a play.

JJ's job is to provide the explosiveness that has been lacking in the offense, and hopefully grow into the near-30-year-old White's #1 role in time, but for 2011 at least, there's not a ton to suggest that he'll see consistent enough production to warrant being taken above a lot of safer or higher-upside bets this year.
