Peyton Manning won’t be ready for the start of camp

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 20, 2011, 8:25 AM EDT

Peyton Manning has more to think about these days than antitrust litigation and a new contract. He has to get healthy fast.

Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star reports that Manning will not be ready to fully participate in training camp when it opens because of neck surgery done earlier this offseason.

“A source familiar with Manning’s health situation said Tuesday that Manning will not be able to participate at the outset, and at this point, there’s no way of knowing how much time he might miss. It could be a week. It could be a couple of weeks. Or even most, or all, of training camp,” Kravitz writes.

The Colts said they had “little or no worry” about Manning’s May surgery, but the Manning family has sung a different tune. Archie Manning raised concerns about his rate of recovery in June, and Peyton said he has “no idea” when he’ll be ready a few weeks ago.

Apparently the Colts have a better idea now. After an offseason without OTAs or minicamps, Manning will miss more on field work.

probably, but are you (or anyone) changing your opinion about him for FF purposes?

Sure, I'd put him at #4 or 5 on any QB list. Rodgers, Rivers and Brees are well ahead of him. Brady? Sure, maybe. He'd be #1 two years ago, but some of that slip has more to do with the rise of those guys, but if reports are true he's gingerly turning his neck in July then taking an NFL hit in 6 weeks could become problematic.

I'd put Vick on that list before Brady. (strictly from a points perspective)

No. Way. Way overpriced, plus teams will have the NYG blueprint for shutting him down. Last year was the proverbial lightning in a bottle for the guy. Rivers is probably better this year and can be had at least a half round later, if not more.

With teams not having true training camps (at least yet) and the potential of a shortened preseason, do u really think that every team is going to be able to prepare for being able to contain Vick and guarding his receivers???

I will grant that it would depend on ur scoring system but most systems reward QB's for rushing yds and TDs

I think it'll work both ways - Vick won't have as much time to prepare either. But go right ahead and take him with your 1st round pick.

Not with him being a year older. I know he stands more in the pocket these days, but is a higher injury risk than then just about any other player in the league.

Are you refering to the same Giants who allowed the Miracle at the Meadowlands 2?

For FFL purposes, Vick has to be in that mix somewhere

ETA: just saw some later comments on Vick, and I disagree. If he is healthy, he'll be top-5 FFL wise, purely on his ability to rush the ball. he may only throw 18-22 TDs, but the fact he'll rush for another 700 yards and 6-8 TDs will put him in the mix.

Oh, and LO....please explain that NYG defense comment....then look at the box score from the last NYG game

Off the top my myhead, I'd go Rodgers, Manning, Vick, Brady, Brees, Ryan, Rivers, Romo in that order with the 1st tier being Rodgers, Manning and Vick.

I reserve all rights to revise that.
