Antonio Gates

How early is too early for Gates this year in a redraft? Is 1.10 too early? I really don't think he'll be there at 3.10. I took Andre Johnson last year at 1.8, and the numbers (while Gates was healthy) were pretty comparable, if not in favor of Gates.

All opinions are welcome.

Uh, yeah. TE is pretty deep - or at least deeper than it has been - this year. He has a history of injuries. Definitely my #1 TE but there's no way I waste a first-rounder on him. You say he won't be there at 3.10, and you're probably right. Why not take him with your 2nd rounder? Still a little early, IMO.

His health issues are exactly the reason I'm asking for others' opinions.

We use a "snake" draft - I pick at 1.10 and 2.1. (read between those lines :lol: )

Who else is in his stratosphere?

Oh, guess I'm stuck in the 12-team league mold.

In a PPR league I'd be pretty darn happy with Gates, Clark or Witten. I'd be pleased with Davis or Finley. The next tier down is a big group and would be who I'd target much, much later if I missed on the top-5.

I'm also of the opinion that systems are clearly opening up to TE more than in the past, at least since the salad days of early Gonzo and Wesley Walls. Gates probably comes at a premium this year, and at 2.1 (11th overall) I wouldn't touch him in favor of a Roddy White or Reggie Wayne. Moeaki could be a later round steal this year, along with the pair in NE.

Lottsa depth - and I do love the guy - but FF wise there are better ways to spend your top draft picks.

Whats your scoring system ? PPR ? 1.5 TE PPR ?

non-PPR

1 point / 10 yards receiving /rushing

6 pts TD catch/rush

Anything over 100 for a week is a pretty decent score. My recollection is the dude was most consistent player until the injury. And that toe issue is kind of scary to me too.

He is in a league of his own, like having a #1 WR in your TE slot. If I remember correctly he was top scoring fantasy player overall when he went down in my leagues... 'course Vincent Jackson wasn't there either, so I'm not sure how that will pan out...

I don't believe I would draft him in the first round, but I wouldn't hesitate in the 2nd.

I don't remember him having a toe problem(could be mistaken), but he did have Plantar Fasciitis which is an inflammation of the ligaments under your foot, and very painful... except his was torn, and I can't imagine how tough the guy is attempting to play on that.Just the inflammation is like someone sticking a knife in the bottom of your foot...

The guy I wouldn't touch is Clark... now there's a heart breaker...

From upcoming JUMbotron -

"Gates is still only 31 and remember, last year he was on pace for 1500 yards & 22 TDs after five games."

I'm gonna be tempted to take him in the 2nd round of my big local draft, where our league gives huge bonuses for 100 yds -- Having tight ends that manage that feat 3-4 times is a big deal for us.

You need to keep in mind that VJ will be back and play the full season. I think Gate's production takes a substantial hit. Substantial in that he will still be the top producing TE but no where near where he was when healthy last year.

I agree with you. Gates will still be a production beast because Rivers loves to throw to him.

Jumbo, with all due respect, I will be taking Roddy White in the 2nd and you can have Gates. Then I will come back later and get Witten.

Good to see you back, btw
