delusions of grandeur
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Ravens have informed Willis McGahee he'll be released on Thursday. Per Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, GM Ozzie Newsome told McGahee on Monday afternoon. The Baltimore Sun reported McGahee's release would occur after the lockout several months ago, so this isn't a surprise. The 30-year-old running back was due a $6 million base salary, and his yards-per-carry average plummeted to a career-low 3.76 last season including the playoffs. Now I know better than to think that the Ravens want to wear Rice down with the goal-line work, but both Parmele and McClain (who is a UFA right?) have struggled with ball security. From what I've seen and heard, Rice is plenty capable between the tackles, but I guess I'll believe it when I see it that they don't bring someone else in to vulture his TD's. Jackass
it's decent news for rice owners but i'd expect them to bring in someone else.
DMD
Rice already had over 300 carries last year (307) so how much more work he gets is probably not a lot. He would up with around 20 carries per game in most of the second half of the season. But McGahee only had one TD in the final nine games as opposed to the 3 for Rice in that time frame.McClain had none then. Rice is already attractive from his yards and catches anyway so TDs are pretty much just gravy.
i_am_the_swammi
Wouldn't shock me one bit to see them bring in a Ronnie Brown-type RB to share the load, say 70/30. They know as much as we do that giving Rice the ball 300+ times a year, every year, is a recipe for them needing another RB in 2-3 years. Factoring in his catches, his 370 touches last year was #3 behind Steven Jackson (376) and Arian Foster (393 and no way he carries that load again obtw).
