Capt. Stanky
Being a longtime frustrated Bengals fan, the topic of The Salary Cap Floor interests me more than any of the other new developments as part of the new CBA. The way I understand it is teams will have to spend a certain amount to be in compliance with the salary floor. With the new Salary floor, I believe the Bengals have 47 million dollars to spend this year alone to get into compliance (allot of that money is assuming CPalmer retires). Based on how I understand it, any of that 47 mill they aren't able to spend will be put into some kind of account. What happens to that money? Also, with the Bengals long history of being cheap (Yes, I'm looking at you Mike Brown) I don't foresee FA's knocking down our doors to get some of this money. Hell, if I played in the NFL the Bengals are one of the last franchises I would want to play for. How can a team be penalized if FA's just don't want to play for that team? Anyone understand this stuff, or are we just going to have to learn as we go? Edited July 25, 2011 by Capt. Stanky
delfamdelfam
I'm not sure of the punishments, but I've heard people say most of the money will be spent on resigning their own players. The Buccaneers have something like $54 million to spend but they can spend a lot of that giving extensions to Freeman,Williams, Blount. delusions of grandeur
IIRC, the remaining money is split up among the players on their roster at the end of the year, or something like that. Man, I remember seeing AJ picked and how hard he was trying to hide his dissapointment that the rumors of playing for the Falcons weren't true, and he was going to the Bengals instead. As a UGA fan, I was really bummed at the time too, but maybe getting the divas out of town will be the first step in building a functional organization. I know I'll be happy to see them gone for AJ's sake.

How in the world can the Bengals justify keeping a head coach who's only had 2 winning seasons in 8 years? The reason is because the owner Mike Brown wants to save money. Stop blaming Chad Ochocinco. Stop blaming Carson Palmer. The owner is not committed to winning. Plain and simple. Bold 2011 prediction: The Bengals will suck.
Duchess Jack
I'd be interested in hearing more details about the soft cap. Do players who have been on a team a long time have their salaries count less against the cap? Does the discount continue to increase the longer they are on the team? Duchess Jack
I want to see Mike Brown cut Ocho because his salary is too high while at the same time maintaining his stance on Palmer.

Anyone understand this stuff, or are we just going to have to learn as we go? If anything, they can OVERpay for their existing guys, and not just the free agents. They can throw a lot of cash at Jonathan Joseph (and would be stupid if they let him walk) and lock up some of the younger players (Leon Hall, Rivers) to extensions with upfront cash that counts against the cap this year to get to the floor. Plus they need some serious o-line help, so if they were smart they would start spending some of that extra green right now if they plan on feilding a contender. Y'know, that floor might be my favorite part of the new CBA. You cant have the cheapskate owners like Mike Brown rape the city witha horrible stadium deal (or threaten to leave) and then have him spend peanuts to field a team. Now unless they have trained chimps for coaches and scouts, they HAVE to go out and spend some cash on players to hit that floor. Hopefully for Bengal fans, that will translate into increased success on the field.
