A new Quarterback rating system

Looks like ESPN is trying to get rid of the old QB Passer Rating and come up with something better. Their rating system is supposed to come out on Friday August 5th. I personally don't like the passer rating system much and would like to see something better. Anyone else intrigued?

So if a receiver doesn't run down the field far enough to get a first down on a 3rd down play, the QB rating goes down? It sounds like it's 4 times more complicated than what we have now. I think that many NFL talking heads already say that they don't understand the rating system we have now. What will they say next?

I was hoping for something simpler.

One more thing... does the new rating system take into account for different offensive systems? Some teams throw down the field more than others. Some teams have boring pass offenses, but enough about Brad Childress.

If you had any question about the validity of ESPN's new QBR rating they're trying to pimp:

Tebow rates #5 on the QBR ratings for the week

The QBR system is supposed to go above the traditional passer rating system to somehow be able to magically tell us something as subjective as 'What is the quarterback's contribution to winning in each situation?"

Well, according to the magical QBR ratings, Tebow contributed more positively to his team's "win?" than Aaron Rodgers... I'm starting to think that my hunch was correct that the new "system" is nothing but a way to prop up ESPN's guys over the traditional passer rating. Just look at the differences in top 10 on the year:

Passer Rating:

1) Rodgers

2) Brady

3) Smith

T4) Brees

T4) E. Manning

6) Stafford

7) Fitzpatrick

8) Hasselbeck

9) Romo

10) Schaub

QBR:

1) Rodgers

2) Brady

3) Hasslebeck

4) Brees

5) Fitzpatrick

6) Romo

7) Stafford

8) Henne

9) Rivers

10) Vick

Obviously the passer rating is not without a few flaws of rating the best QBs, but clearly the ESPN rating is either full of it, or is purely designed to prop up sexier picks like Romo and Vick, and knock less sexy ones like Smith, Manning and Schaub completely out of the top 10.
