The Wolf
No confidence in Travis Beckum? Got me...I'll leave that to Giant fans to discuss. They know more about their team than I!

Square
Not a bad pickup. I don't think Boss is near as good as Miller, but they could have done a lot worse.
matt770
Beckum looked impressive in mini-camp last year, flying around making great catches. We'll see if he can step into the starting role. They would not have let Boss go if they didn't trust Beckum.

soopanuts
I disagree. I think they wanted to bring Boss back, but didn't want to overpay. He'll be missed, especially early on with the all turnover on the OL. I think PFT put it best: "Boss isn’t as good a receiver as Miller, but he’s a superior blocker. Boss was a favorite of Eli Manning, who won’t be pleased when he hears this news."

They need the protection for Cambell who has difficulty staying in the pocket for the deep ball. Boss is a great blocker that comes with some decent hands. Giants have thier big receiver in Nicks, so they need a blocker more than they need a receiving TE.

BearBroncos
Bump for McFadden, given Boss' blocking skills. Dunno about that. I'm fairly sure he'd be used more for pass protections. I think it would, however, be a bump for the receiving core, i.e. Ford in the long ball.
bpwallace49
Beckum is not a blocker. He is strictly a receiver (at least so far) . If he has improved his blocking, then Beckum may be a viable option. Until I see that, Bradshaw and Jacobs take a hit.

BPW49 implying that losing Boss' blocking skills will hurt Bradshaw and Jacobs (pending Beckum's ability), but BearBroncos feels those same skills do not really bump up Raider backs. Good discussion...what say you? Edited August 5, 2011 by The Wolf

Good discussion...what say you? I agree with you that Boss will improve Mcfadden/Bush, but not as much as Bradshaw/Jacobs will be hurt from the comparative drop off from Boss to Beckam, plus the changes to the Giants offensive line. IMO Miller is a better blocker than Beckum. Last thing to take into consideration is the division they play in, and the relative strengths/weaknesses of division rivals on defense. IMO the NFC east will play the run much better than the AFC west, based on personnel changes. Hope that helps . . .
delusions of grandeur
I agree. Carlson and a 2nd for Osi? This is what I'm thinking... It had already been rumored before the Boss move that this could happen... I know the Giants are playing hardball by no longer permitting Osi to seek a trade, but that ugly situation could only get uglier (and to be honest, I side with Osi for management making promises to him they couldn't keep)... So I think that'd be a good fit... Lose the problem (who you've got a replacement for in Pierre-Paul anyway) and bring in Carlson for some open competition at TE... Though I'm not sure if this report is more speculation or confirmation about Beckham: "The New York Daily News confirms that Travis Beckum will now be the Giants' pass-catching tight end." IMO Miller is a better blocker than Beckum. The margin between the 2 in regard to blocking isn't even close. Boss is considered one of the better blocking TE's in the NFL. Boss set a career high of 42 catches last season and should vastly improve on that number in Oakland. I have to say though, I had some high hopes for Brandon Myers. Good discussion...what say you? I could absolutely be wrong in that it won't help the running game. Do you think they will run McFadden on the outside more? They ran him a TON up the middle last year and he was successful there. If they do run him more on the outside or slants, then I think he could improve the run. But if they run up the middle which was his strength last year, I see no improvement. Unless they but him in as a FB that is.

Um . . . what the frank are you discussing here? Boss being a good blocker is a given. My point is the comparative difference between Beckam and Miller, and how they will effect their respective teams. Blocking ability Boss> Miller> . . . . . . . . Beckham. The point is that the difference between Boss/Miller is less than the difference between Boss/Beckam, hence a greater drop off for New York versus the Raiders . . . ahh . . forget it. :shakeshead:
