Try that again Vick

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP)—Eagles quarterback Michael Vick(notes) completed a pass against Asante Samuel(notes) during training camp Saturday and the always-chatty cornerback challenged Vick to try it again.

“Do that again, Vick,” he yelled.

The quarterback obliged him on the very next play, completing a bomb against Samuel to wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins(notes), whom the team recently signed as a free agent.

It was part of strong day for Vick and his makeshift receiving corps, which is without starting wideouts DeSean Jackson(notes) and Jeremy Maclin(notes). Jackson is holding out in a contract dispute, and Maclin has an undisclosed illness.

Slot receiver Jason Avant(notes) is the most experienced pass-catcher on hand entering his sixth year with the team. Second-year men Chad Hall and Riley Cooper(notes) also have seen time with the first team, as has newcomer Sinorice Moss(notes), a free agent who spent his first five seasons with the New York Giants.

Before Saturday the play of the inexperienced group had been “up and down— almost maddening,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

After Saturday’s session, however, Mornhinweg pronounced the receivers’ play “excellent.”

“Now,” he said, “the fellows are getting just a bit more comfortable.”

Avant said such inconsistency is not unexpected, given the receivers’ lack of seasoning.

“When there’s uncertainty about what you’re doing, it’s going to make you slower,” he said. “Once the guys get to realizing what they’re doing, they’re going to play faster.”

It is unclear when the Eagles will have Maclin or Jackson, who last year had 70 and 47 receptions, respectively. The team opens the preseason Thursday night at home against Baltimore.

Avant doesn’t believe it will take long for the two veterans to get acclimated.

“You can put Maclin (or) DeSean out there, right there today, and they won’t have a missed assignment,” he said.

For now, the Eagles are getting by with the receivers they have.

“Jeremy will get healthy, DeSean will get back and we’ll get rolling,” Vick said.

Even without DeSean Jackson, who will reportedly end his holdout Monday, and Jeremy Maclin, who remains sidelined by an undisclosed illness, Vick spread the ball to backups named Jason Avant, Riley Cooper, Chad Hall, Sinorce Moss and Johnnie Lee Higgins.

If he could carve up the defense with those guys, imagine the potential when Maclin and Jackson get back on the field.

“As you know, he can light it up as quarterback right now and then now he takes that extra step and he becomes a surgeon,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. “You know what I’m saying there? That’s the next step there.”

I sounds as if the coach is telling everyone that Vick is developing into a Peyton Manning type QB. I'll believe it when I see it against someone other than the practice squad....

Peyton had a hard time against Patriot CBs. Just sayin'

You might want to check his stats against the Patriots the last few years.

Overall:

New England Patriots 7-10record 633att 396comp 62.5% 4712yards 7.4avg 78Tlong 37TD 24INT 88.9rating

In 17 games, that's better numbers in almost EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY than Vick has ever put up in a single year. He did have a 62.6% last year. And his QB rating was over 100 last year.

I know those stats will against the Pats will have double stars by them. 1) for Peyton and Co. crying to the NFL about the game being too physical 2) the Pats video taping practices

I like how you villify any person who is rich while spouting in the Tailgate but have no problem worshiping a person like Vick over a person like Manning.

I don't care how good Vick looks or how good he may or may not be this year - bottom line is that he is a waste of breath. Sick human being.

Peyton Manning has better stats than Michael Vick. Makes more money than Michael Vick. Has won 4 league MVP's, Michael Vick has none. Has two Super Bowl appearances, Michael Vick has none. Has a Super Bowl MVP, Michael Vick has none. Has a Super Bowl ring, Michael Vick has none.

lol  Weakest post on that topic ever.

Sadly, this is Vick's year. Eagles were good last year and have blown everyone away in the FA market. Easy favorites for 2011 champs.
