How bad are 8 team leagues?

So we've had a work league going for 5 years or so and this year 6 owners out of 10 have moved, left the company, etc. We may have a tough time getting 10 owners so we're considering doing an 8 team league. I've heard it kinda sux, but my question is how bad is it?

It is not inherently bad, if you make a few adjustments.

THe reason many say it is bad is because, if using "standard" lineups (1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR) and a roster of 16 or so players, every team is stacked at each position and there is a plethora of talent on the waiver wire that there is little need for owners to interact (i.e. trade) and each week is basically a crap shoot.

My suggestion is to increase the lineup req to 2QBs, 2 or 3 RBs, 3-4 WRs, 1-2 TEs and a flex or two. Push the roster to say 24-26 players.

If it is a bunch of totally casual players and you are just looking for fun, it's not needed to make the changes, but to me it definitely enhances the experience.

Which is exactly the great part about 8 man leagues. There are no easy decisions. There is no obvious waiver wire stud. Every week you are making hard decisions on your team - whether to pick up Blount or not, and do you really drop Shonn Greene to do it? In the 12 man leagues I play I rarely make more than 1 or 2 actual decisions - you're pretty much playing the same starters each week except 1 or 2 where you have enough quality depth to actually make you think about it. You don't see this in an 8 man - every player is a viable start every week, the matchups matter a ton, and yes you consider benching Manning because he's playing a tough defense on the road in a noisy stadium whereas Cutler is playing Detroit on turf. You'd be surprised how anguishing this can be.

Good owners are obvious, and bad ones are even moreso. Nothing sucks more than some donkey playing the blind luck play and getting 26 out of Seji Arijotutu and beating you because of it and you don't get this in 8 man leagues.

Keep roster limits small and waiver pickups smaller. This will push the interaction a bit more. My homer league only allows 1 add/drop per week so you really need to maximize these. We also allow owners to trade "your pickup" so it's frequent to see these change hands.

Good sugg, but yall are on an even keel, so w...t f.

BUT...

BC's suggs will make it more interesting and tilt the draft for the wise player.

Go w/ BC's suggs!

Not bad and I think to call them bad is an overstatement. Sure teams are a little strong er but you decisions are just farther up the tiers now. I would consider starting more players and perhaps larger rosters as well.

My one local was 8 for about 6 or 7 years in the 90s. It was still fun just different types of choices each week. Now you decide if you want to sign Stafford or Fitzpatrick for a bye week instead of Tavaris Jackson or Alex Smith. Which one sounds more fun?

Bad leagues are 16 teams. Talk about no depth and every decision is handcuffed because there is no one available....

an eight team league is all about luck. Everybody has studs - bunches of them. Studs will perform, it just comes down to which one. an eight team league hurts a savvy well informed owner

no

you alleviate this by increasing roster size and starting more past the standard line-up. Trust me, the people who knew what they were doing still won. The bigger the league the more luck you need.

1- luck to sign a "sleeper"

2- luck that you have waiver priority (or bid slightly more than anyone else)

3- luck that your wafer thin roster doesn't sustain a major injury

Not true at all. I play in one 8 team league. Most active owners finish at the top year after year. We have more starters than 10-12 team leagues and deep benches. To me, it is fun in a different way.

I think a majority of FF players started out in 8 team leagues many years ago. Leagues have progressed to 10,12,14,16 teams now with IDP,PPR and a vast majority of lineup variances. Most of us that did play in the 8 teamer's have progressed and moved on to more complex and engaging play. I don't hate them, per say, but I havn't been in an 8 team league since the 90's. Thats not taking anything away from them, either. If thats what you like, then its what you like....its still FF.

We have had an eight team league going for years however it is that way cause we are all Australians and that is the way we wanted it, it is a keeper IDP league and because we all know each other it will always be a good league. we have 35 man rosters with 20 starters (std 4-3 def with PN and K 1 QB 1 WR 1 TE and 4 flex spots to be used on offense) I can see however if you don't know or hang around the guys that an eight team league may not be fun but in an office or whatever you could make any size league fun to be honest.

We have a 4 team playoff system in which the top two teams playoff in week one of the playoffs and team 3 and 4 playoff the winner of 1 and 2 advances straight to the championship and the loser of that game plays the winner of the game between 3 and 4 whils the loser of that game is eliminated. Obfviously then the winner of that game goes to the championship to meet the other team.

my keepers on offense from last season were Aaron Rodgers, Arian Foster, LeSean McCoy and Calvin Johnson and I still couldn't make the playoffs.

I play in a local 8 team league and a wcoff 12 man league and my 8 man league will always be my favorite. We start 2QB 3RB 4WR 1TE 1K 3DL 3LB 3DB for a total of 20 starters. We have 32 man rosters. Every person in this league has been in larger leagues yet every one of them says they like this one the best. For example when you only start 9 or 10 players if one has a huge week there is a good chance you will win. When you have 20 starters you have to have balance and can't just get lucky and win bc your QB scored 50 points. One owner said to me he liked how one week Mcnabb scored 57 points yet he still lost. He claimed that's what made the 8 team league more competitive and less about luck b/c of so many starters. Everyone has their own opinion but we love our league and we are going into our 18th year with people on a waiting list to join but we barely have people leave. Try it I think you will like it unless you only have 10 starters then it will suck b/c everyone will have studs all over.

Hopefully you're not doing WCOFF this year

I'm in a 6 team league, with fairly large payouts. (Top team may win 800 or more).

We have roster of 3 QBs, start 2; 6 RBs start 4; 7 WRs, start 4; 3 PK, start 2; 3 DT, start 2; plus 3 "wild cards" - any players (usually QBs), start 2.

Also no waivers, except for one "redraft" at halfway point, to replace injuries, bench, etc.

It is interesting, and I still see the smarter owners (me for example!) do better every year.

What is that supposed to mean? I lost in the championship game last year. I play in the $500wcoff league that a guy runs on this site. Come join our league. Also I was the champion of our local league.

In a nutshell, they had not paid many of last year's winners.
