ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—Lions coach Jim Schwartz says running back Mikel Leshoure(notes) has a torn Achilles tendon and is out for the year.

The rookie was injured after being hit high by defensive end Cliff Avril(notes) during practice Monday. He was carted off the team’s practice field after being attended to by team trainers.

Schwartz says “he’ll be back, but it won’t be this season.”

The Lions were counting on the second-round pick from Illinois to provide power in the backfield to go along with the speedy Jahvid Best(notes).

The injury is just the latest for Detroit. The Lions’ starting offensive tackles and a key backup are recovering from injuries

Oh man... that might be it for the kid's career. I hope the science of sports injuries has advanced enough to get him back on the field some day.

From wiki...

Well known professional athletes who have undergone an Achilles rupture include Todd Pinkston, WR for the Philadelphia Eagles, Lawrence Taylor, LB for the New York Giants, Jordan Doherty (Flair United, Trolley King 2006), Dan Marino, QB for the Miami Dolphins, Reggie Kelly, TE for the Cincinnati Bengals, Marlin Jackson, CB for the Philadelphia Eagles, Vinny Testaverde, QB for the New York Jets, Jerome James from the Chicago Bulls, Mehmet Okur from the Utah Jazz, Justin Williams from the Carolina Hurricanes, Kalin Lucas a point guard from Michigan State, Misty May-Treanor from the U.S. Olympic beach volleyball team, and professional wrestler Edge. Most recently, David Beckham, an internationally known footballer and icon ruptured his achilles tendon, also ending his ability to play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup for England. Sami Salo, a defenceman for the NHL's Vancouver Canucks suffered an Achillies tendon rupture in July 2010. After surgery and a rehab period lasting through until February 2011 he returned to the NHL, going on to score two slap shot goals against the San Jose Sharks team in Game 4 of the 2011 Western Conference finals.

I bet you the news of LeShour's injury spured this decision.

Ricky Williams - RB - Ravens Ravens signed Ricky Williams to a two-year contract, a source tells ProFootballTalk.com.

It's bad news for Ray Rice. Williams was perhaps the best free agent running back still available after averaging 4.2 yards-per-carry in 16 games for the Dolphins last year. In Baltimore, he has a good chance at filling the role vacated by Willis McGahee. McGahee recorded 100 carries and served as the goal-line back behind Rice last season. Related: Ricky Williams

Best just moved way up in my rankings

Ya know what, I came here to post just the opposite. Well, not the exact opposite, but perhaps to just be cautious in now over-valuing Best. He's had injury concerns since college. And yes, I know he didn't miss any games in his rookie season last year, but the turf toe severely hindered his best assets: speed and shiftiness.

At this point, we have to assume he'll have a larger role in the offense with LeShoure LeShelved. But I'm not sure I would go and move Best up a whole lot based on this.

I own Best in a dynasty league, and this news has me on the fence. On one hand, he could blow up (if he remains healthy). Or he'll get hurt Week 3 or 4 and will either sit out a good amount of time, or will "play through it" and only get me 60% of what he's capable of.

E2A: Add me to the list of athletes who had torn Achilles tendons. ..... But in all seriousness, if I had a trainer on top of me 24/7 following the best rehab money could buy, I think I'd be close to 100%. Heck, I feel hardly no ill effects of the injury.
