I am now very worried about Manning missing games.

i don't know if I would be VERY worried...but worried, yes

reason is that Collins still needs to get in and learn the offense etc. but this does now say the Colts are also worried, either about Manning (my guess) or their backup situation due to concerns that Manning could get hurt during the season.

Edit: Collins and Polllian were together back in mid 90's

That was a really smart move by Indy. And, yes, this could mean Manning is missing some games. Then again, it might have more to do with the fact that they realize, for the first time in forever, he actually might be missing some games so they need to upgrade from the glorified waterboys they've been getting away with having back him up.

Colts | Do not believe Peyton Manning will be ready for opener

Wed, 24 Aug 2011 08:37:17 -0700

The Indianapolis Colts officials do not believe QB Peyton Manning (neck) will be ready for Week 1, but Manning remains hopeful that he will be able to play in the game.

For such a well-run team, it's always surprised me that they seem to neglect the back up QB spot. Granted - when you have Manning the plan is to never use a back-up - but insurance is always nice.

It's all about priorities and what things cost. And when you have an HOF QB who gets sacked less than 10x a year, back-up QB should be the absolute last thing you should waste draft picks or FA money on.

Think about it this way. If you draft Manning in FF, you just put that position to bed. Sure, if it's super late in the draft and you can get a guy you like as QB2, why not. But then, you don't have to pay that guy. But you're certainly not spending a 8th rounder on a QB. That would be stupid because surely there's guys at other positions who stand half a chance of actually seeing some PT for you that you can draft.

Indy put the QB position to bed years ago and spends their time and money chasing after other things they need.

Because no matter what they do the backup wouldn't be able to run the O like Manning. God himself is less sure where Reggie Wayne will be on any given play. No sense wasting resources when it won't matter.

Not to worry. I have assured in another thread by Huddlers with irrefutable knowledge of the situation that Manning will start week 1, will play another 5 years, and should be expected to throw for 6500+ yds and 87 TDs this season.

You need to re-read that thread.

This proves that Colts players falling in drafts was justified. I just didn't feel good about this from the moment I heard about Manning's lingering neck trouble. Best case scenario is probably that Manning comes back in week 2, but how long before he gets in "the groove"? This isn't going to be good.

capthook has assured me of this. After all they just signed him to a big contract blah blah blah.

You mean Sorgi and Painter weren't good backups? Impossible; Polian is a genius!

Colt fans have scratched their heads about this one for Manning's entire career. It's not exactly a secret that to a large extent he IS the team, so I can kind of see saying "why does it matter, we're screwed without Manning." But it's not all about needing a backup an entire year or really long time; then I agree that then it won't matter much who the backup is given the lack of a good enough team around him. But they could be having an off year and fighting for the playoffs and needing someone to just eke out a win or 2 down the stretch, or come in to a game (maybe even a playoff game) if he's nicked up etc. So I totally disagree that backup QB is one the last things they should care about. They just got complacent and relied on his good health, which is like playing Russian roullette regarding an NFL QB, even Manning.

As for Collins - yikes. He's better than Painter but frankly not sure about better than Olsavsky, who I would still very much keep around. Collins' biggest thing is he can heave the deep ball to keep Ds honest, which the Colts of course need, but with how much accuracy?

Hey dipSHAM WOW!, I said the neck injury can't be career threatening, or they wouldn't have signed him to a 5 year $90 million deal.

I said that until they sign a veteran back-up, I am confident Manning will be ready for Week 1.

Do you see the difference? Or do I have to explain it again?
