I am the co-commish of a 12 team local league that is changing to a 14 teamer this year. The other commish and I are looking at how to do it, playoff and division wise. I think we have settled on two 7 team divisions but we are up in the air about number of teams in playoffs. I say six and he says eight. What do you in 14 team leagues do? TIA

Make sure you define tie-breaker.

A)

Divisional Rankings

Best won-lost percentage in games played within the division.

Head-to-head (best won-lost percentage in games between the clubs).

Best won-lost percentage in common games (games played against the same opponents).

Best won-lost percentage in games played within the conference.

Strength of victory (the combined won-lost percentage of all the teams that a club has defeated).

Strength of schedule (the combined won-lost percentage of all the teams that a club has played against).

Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.

Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.

Best net points in common games.

Best net points in all games.

Best net touchdowns in all games.

Size of your CoCK!

Often, teams will finish a season with identical records. It becomes necessary, therefore, to use Power Rankings either to determine which teams will qualify for the playoffs, or to determine seeding in the playoff tournament. Power Rankings are followed in order until the tie is broken. If three teams are tied for one playoff spot and the third team is eliminated at any step, the tie breaker reverts to step one for the remaining two teams. If multiple playoff spots are at stake, the rules are applied in order until the first team qualifies, then the process is started again for the remaining teams.

This is how we do it:

Decimal scoring to 2 positions to minimize ties to pretty much nil.

If they tie in the regular season, it's a tie.

If there is a tie in the play-offs, we go to an assigned bench player. If they tie, higher seed advances.

14 team - one division/conference of all 14 teams

You play every team once = 13 weeks. Easy head-to-head tie-breakers for the play-offs. Nobody has an "easy division" since you play everyone.

6 teams make the play-offs. Decided by over-all record, then head2head records, then total points. We do give monetary bonus to the top 3 teams (you could consider them the equivalent of division winners).

Week 14 = WIldcard round.

#3 seed vs #6 seed

#4 seed vs #5 seed

Week 15 = Semifinal round.

#1 seed vs worst seed advancing from wildcard round

#2 seed vs better seed advancing from wildcard round

Week 16 = Championship

The two winning teams from the Semifinal round battle it out

We use two divisions, 13 games. Top 3 in each play off...week 14 the top teams in each division get a bye, #2 vs #3, Week 15 #1 vs week 14 winners, Week 16 Super Bowl. Then we let the other 8 play a three week total points...lowest score brings food and drink for the following years draft. As someone above said make sure you have tie-breakers defined...we use H2H, Divisional Record, Total Points for, Total points against.

This is my preferred method for 14-teams.
