The potential may be there, but then you're asking Chad Henne to be Mike Vick or Roethlisberger. That's a bit of a stretch.

Yes, talent does not always dictate. For example Wallace, if Holmes does not "wake and bake" regularly than Wallace might be putting up pedestrian numbers as the the #3 WR in Pittsburgh.

All he has is speed. He's not nearly the route runner or technician those other guys are. He's not as fast in and out of breaks as he should be and NFL corners will eat that alive. If he improves that area he has a chance, but not unless this happens. Everyone is fast in the NFL, it take more. Just ask the Ismails.

He's actually running much better routes than they expected. He's a great pickup on a dynasty team, but he more likely a waiver guy in redrafts.

Interesting, Mayock was all over this guy about his combine performance. Where is this assessment coming from? Not that I doubt you, just wondering what the details are.

First off, he is going by Clyde now, not Edmund.

I have drafted Gates in a contract league and a dynasty league and am in love with his potential, so take this with a grain of salt:

I think you are way off on this kid. He isn't the type that needs a prolific arm to get him the ball downfield. Gates is incredibly fast, gets to top speed in very short order, and is extremely difficult to tackle in the open field. His catch and run ability is superb - so that makes him a great target on quick routes that get him the ball at the second level and then use his running ability. He can make his bones on quick outs and slants where he can make a guy miss and then is off to the races.

Where Gates needs refinement and coaching is in his route running, which is sloppy, and his concentration, where he can start running before he has secured the ball. But he is a hands catcher and he has a hugh catch radius.

This is the type of kid - who if he can overcome his focus issues and do one thing at a time can be a mediocre QB's best friend, as he can turn short dumps into long gainers. Like Marshall - again provided he works on catching and then running and he sharpens his initial cut on his routes - he can rack up a lot of YAC and make a guy like Henne look a lot better.

He's got some work to do on his game, but oh man are the possibilities of hugh upside there with this kid. And from what I have seen of camp reports, he is doing very well so far and is listed as Hartline's immediate backup. IMO Hartline doesn't have the game to keep Gates off the field for long.

another problem with Gates is that there are a lot of mouths to feed in Miami...

Marshall, Bess, Hartline, Fasano, Bush and D. Thomas.

We also have two wides on the bubble that are very interesting prospects: Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore. Neither will beat out Gates, but one of them 'should' hopefully make the team.

If Bess is going to cut into anyone's production, it would be Marshall's. He and Marshall play the same position in that O, while Hartline and Gates are vying for the other wideout reps.
