Gates

No receptions at all today, and couldn't even get any separation when it was one on one coverage. Sat out the last two series of the game. I've had him in my dynasty league since he first broke out, and I hate to say it but I'm guessing that his plantar fascitis is back. If so San Diego will need to shelf him.

Until we read otherwise, that's all you're doing is guessing. Could be that the Pats just decided that Gates wasn't going to beat them and they game planned to shut him down.

There's been nothing in the local media about him re-injuring his foot. The game plan was to take him away from Rivers, and they succeeded.

Floyd, on the other hand, is hurt AGAIN with a groin pull.

News: San Diego TE Antonio Gates finished without a catch for the first time since 2008 during the Chargers' 35-21 loss to New England in Week 2 on Sunday. Gates was targeted only once by QB Philip Rivers as he was blanketed by the Patriots defense all game. "They would put a corner or safety on me, or two safeties," said Gates, who had eight receptions in Week 1. "They did a lot of different things to take me out of the game."

Doesn't appear that it was an injury.

It's not like he blows by DB's to get the ball here, and Patrick Chung is no slouch.

The pats and Bellicheck will at times decided to take away your best player and make someone else beat them. With Chung+someone else they did that. If his foot was an issue he wouldn't have been playing in the fourth quarter. They were just outplayed today. Gates and Rivers were just off today. No need to worry.

Educatedly guessing, which is the best one can do when working with incomplete information, which is what we do every week here. Why else would he have been out for the last two series??? Gates missed practice for the second day in a row, injury listed as "foot." San Diego should probably just shelve him now and maybe they'd have him back at 100% by next year. If the foot isn't good by now it certainly isn't going to get better as the season drags on. And I watched the Pats game from beginning to end. He wasn't double covered all game, there were times when he had only single coverage but he looked like he was plodding on those plays along with all the others.

I repeat: Gates WASN'T playing for the last 2 series of the game in the fourth quarter. He had been removed.

I heard an interview with Kevin Acee, who is the beat writer for the Chargers. He was very concerned about Gates. He said the foot is an issue right now and even said this could be the beginning of the end. He said Gates has an amazing pain tolerance, but he was not out of those series at the end of the game due to frustration or inneffectiveness. He was hurting. He did say it will be different when Gates gets an injection before the game. He will be able to tolerate more.

I own Mr. Gates in a few leagues and love the guy as a fantasy stud, but I am hoping he has a big game this Sunday, so I can try to move him.

Sorry no link. The interview was on XM RotoExperts Show this afternoon.

I was reading about plantar fasciitis a few weeks ago, and read that it's a problem that can take a long time to heal, especially if reaggravated, which is what Gates did to it last year by continuously trying to play through the pain, and what he's at risk of doing again this year if he continues to try to play through it again. He had what a 9 month break or so between the time he was placed on the IR list last year and now? If it isn't healed by now, he won't be this year, and if he doesn't quit it this time around it could indeed be the beginning of the end for him.

sounds scary... maybe right now is the time to move Gates for what you can get?

A bit more news....

Rotoworld

Antonio Gates (foot) was held out of practice again on Thursday.

This is becoming a legitimate concern. Gates was obviously at less than full strength against the Patriots. A team insider told Pro Football Weekly last week that Gates can rule out being 100 percent healthy "for the rest of his career," as the injury has robbed him of the speed and athleticism needed as a vertical threat. Reliable beat writer Kevin Acee is giving Mike Tolbert (calf) a better chance than Gates to play this week.

If this is the beginning of the end of Gates' illustrious career, it is a sad day in Chargerville.
