Ok Let's nit pick Romo

First off, I must say, that was one of the most monumental colapses of all time for my beloved Cowboys. I thought there was no way they could lose this game. That said, I watched the game again to see just how this could have happened and what Romo's part was in it.

The Cowboys lead 27 to 3 going into the third Quarter. I said to myself, we need to just go conservative and let our Defense win the game. But then I thought how do we do that with Felix hurting and behind him Choice and a Rookie. The Lions hadn't done ANYTHING to stop us all game and Romo and Bryant were the best players on the field.

So here goes. 1st pick 6. Romo drops back and doesn't see Carpenter dropping into coverage.

1. Should the ball have been thrown to a one on one reciever on a combacker. Yeah sure why not. Robinson has been doing fine.

a. Romo should have seen the linebacker

b. Ball should not have been thrown there.

c. they should have just run the ball three times and put

Things happen and I just chalked that one up to a great play by Carp.

2. Second pick six. By now they know they just gave the Lions a spark and should be thinking, hey lets not take any chances and make them drive the field for scores against our D.They run the ball and then throw a quick slant to a one on one covered Robinson. Corner makes a great break on the ball and takes it to the house again.

a. the Slant is a very safe play for the most part, for two reasons. The reciever should have position on the corner with a free release and two the reciever should be able to make a play on the ball regardless. So really I blame Robinson for not making a play then letting him get away for a touchdown.

b. Never should have thrown the ball period, unless it's a screen or dump off to a wide open player.

The ball was put where it was suppose to go and the reciever didn't make a play on it. So I blame Robinson for the pick and the 6. I also blame Garrett for not just pounding the ball and making the lions score on offense.

3. Pick number 3. Now the score is 24 -30 after Romo drives down the field on a nice drive and kicks a field goal. Romo was Blitzed and though down field to an open Witten with no safety deep. At this point we have to start playing to score more points. The throw was short and picked. Now the decision was fine. Witten is single covered with a linebacker in coverage. Needed about 1 more foot and its a completion to Witten.

Another nice play by the Linebacker. I can't really blame Romo for the throw. I mean he went to the right place with the ball and into the right coverage so, again I just have to give it to the linebacker for making a great play on the ball.

So in reality, the Cowboys played tough all day with with Lions playing great defense when they had to. I give a lot of credit to the Lions for making plays when they had to in order to pull of the comeback. Romo was playing lights out football for most of the game and as I stated above I really can't blame him for bad decisions for very poor throws because they were not bad throws or were they bad decisions on where to go with the football. I give the Lions players a ton of credit for making great plays on the ball.

So after watching this game twice here's where I lay the blame.

The Cowboys Defense 60%

Jason Garrett 20%

Tony Romo 10%

Recievers 10%

The Cowboys D just had to find a way to step up and make a play like the Lions did. They Sacked Stafford 0 times. They singled covered Megatron to many times when he was the only one that was doing damage.

Jason Garrett should have taken the ball and ran it more and forced the Lions to make plays on Offense to win. Especially after Romo first pick 6. I would have ran the ball for 1 yard three times if I had to but I make darn sure the lions next score was from their offense.

Romo could have just not taken any chances at all. But I think he just has no mechanism to dial it down. He is just wide open all the time and doesnt have a conservative bone in his body. Thats just how he's wired. I can accept that.

Recievers, Robinson has to make sure that play doesn't go for six. He just has to.

All in all, again I am encouraged and disappointed today. I am encouraged because we DOMINATED a very good defensive front and offensive team for most of the game. All of which done with our top WR out, our other WR hurting, Romo still hurting, and a rookie O line. Now with a week off we can get back to full strength and then see what happens. I have to believe we get even better with Austin and Bryant healthy and a full compliment of starting corners.

Disappointed because we lost to a team at home with a 24 point lead, which by the way has never happened to a Cowboys team EVER. Not a good record to set.

2-2 going into the bye. Exactly what I hoped for.

This team is very good and I foresee good things this year.

Go Cowboys.

Everything else aside ... I have to disagree with you on pick number 3. Yes he had the coverage he wanted and had he been able to complete the pass it would have been a big play. But the pocket was collapsing around him and he threw the ball off his back foot. It was another bad decision by Romo ... the ball was so badly thrown (short AND behind Witten) that Witten had zero chance to try and defend the pass.

This is the big problem with Romo ... he ALWAYS tries to make the play even when the better decision is to throw the ball away. Sometimes he DOES make the play and he is the hero - other times he DOES NOT make the play and he is the scapegoat.

Actually, I kind of agree with you here. He makes those throws a lot and I watched it again. The better decision was to throw the ball away and play defense. It was off his back foot and thats not good expecially with sore ribs. It was shorter then I thought after watching it again.

In all seriousness, these are the kind of mistakes he should not still be making. But, he is still only 31 . . . I would not give up on him getting better. There are several current NFL QB's I'd take over Romo . . . Brady, Roethlisberger, either Manning, Rivers, Rodgers, and Brees. So I guess seven guys ahead of him. I might take Freeman and Ryan too . . . kinda undecided there . . . but at worst he's top 10.

Tony Dungy was great for Manning. He cut his turnovers WAY down. That's what Romo needs . . . somebody that holds him accountable for those bonehead plays.

I am beginning to have my doubts on whether or not Romo will ever learn to consistently make the right decisions on the field. I suspect his poor decision making is why Parcells never felt like he was ready.

Having said that I'd probably take him over more than half the QBs in the league ... but I'm not sure that he will ever be able to take the Cowboys to a superbowl (let alone win it).

I said the same thing about Peyton Manning until January 2007. He was almost 31 at the time.

Top 10??!?!? Tony Romo? Please tell me we're talking about fantasy football.

How can it not be completely obvious to even the blindest of homers at this point that no matter how much you wish it and even make yourself believe it, Tony Romo will never, ever, take you anywhere.

If Jon Kitna is your QB, you win that game today. The Cowboys have been as talented as any team in football for several years now. That window will inevitably close in a few years, and because the rest of the Cowboys aren't quite good enough to carry Tony Romo's Circus, they are going to have absolutely zero to show for the era of talent.

We get it. None of it was Tony Romo's fault. Same thing would have happened to anybody. You're lying to yourself. Sorry.

Ok was it all Brady's fault when he threw 4 picks last week. I'm obviously NOT comparing him to Brady but the defense does make plays also. Romos was on all day and only the last pick was really a questionable decision. The ball was put were it was suppose to be and on BOTH pick 6 plays the D made great plays. A really good TEAM could had overcome those mistakes because the D had every opportunity to close this game for us. Romo made many more plays today then he did bad ones but the bad ones went for scores. That won't happen every week. I'm just saying there are few QB's that can put the ball where he can and had proven so to win games. His record is very good and his stats are very strong as well. I'm just saying given the injury situation he has done very well and today was a tough day at the office.

You have to give the Lions a lot of credit. They capitalized on their opportunities.

We'll find out just what this team is made of in two weeks from now. Brady vs. Romo.

I don't think you are going to like the results of that litmus test. Maybe you should pick another. Do they have a division game coming up soon?

Maybe not but it sure shapes up to be one hell of a game. The NE D has wholes and a healthy Cowboys O we have the tools to break it down. Brady is going to get his so it should be a wide open ball game.

Those picks had nothing to do with Tom Brady?? C'mon. Brady barfed a game away. A game. That is the difference. Not three quarters of the big games he's ever played in. A game. His record is very good and his stats are very strong as well. Do you hear yourself right now? WATCH A BIG GAME. Watch. With your own two eyes. WATCH. You already know what's going to happen.

This matchup will have my attention. I agree it will likely be an entertaining game.

Romo is Brett Favre light without the superbowl ring and league MVP's. Dilfer put it best. He just cant manage a game. Sometimes the best play to make is no play at all. He treats every play like the game depends on it.
