This would be the all-time dumbest move in NFL history

Or at the absolute least in the top 2 or 3:

Irsay, in Houston for the NFL Fall Meeting, also said the Colts might want Manning, the league's only four-time MVP, to play late in the year even if they are eliminated from playoff contention, according to CBSSports.com.

 Because........

Let's see: we'll take our franchise QB who is older and coming off of a very serious injury and play him when there is no advantage whatsoever in doing so and if anything will only screw up the chance to draft Luck. Good idea!

The only reason I might do this is to avoid going 0-16, and even then it's dicey.

they can say this but I doubt it will happen. Unelss Manning is 100000% healthy, there is no reason to put him out there.

On the flip side, lets say he is 100% healthy, then why not? I'm not sure if he can be 100% healthy though.

It's going to be interesting to see where the Colts are in the Suck for Luck lottery towards the end of the year. Ya don't think Peyton would be hearing those footsteps? If he does play...or is ALLOWED to play, it will be a strong statement that the Colts are not looking for Peyton's successor just yet. I think they should as Luck is one of those once in a lifetime type of QB's...just like Peyton was.

If Manning is cleared I don't know how there can be any doubt he can play. If they have the chance and don't draft Luck, esp if it's because they think Painter can be their QB of the future, lol @ them. It would be a minor miracle for Painter to pan out simply above average, and the Colts obviously need a LOT more.

If the docs clear him to play, why would you go in to next year with that huge question mark? Play him and see if he really can perform at the level he expects and make sure he can actually take a hit and not be paralyzed. The doctors WILL NOT be able to say with any degree of certainty that he can return to form and take a hit, only that he is as healed as he is going to get.

If he is cleared to play this year, and they choose not to play him, and he goes into next year and is done after his first hit, how stupid are they going to look for not preparing for that possibility? Once they say he is healed, there is no more risk playing him this year than there would be next year, and at least you'd know.

If he's 100%, and medically cleared to play, he plays, if it were me.

This is the bit I don't get. He has more money than God (plus he's a certainty for a high dollar booth gig) and an SB ring so why would he even think of taking such a risk?

I think it's pretty obvious that they are, and will be, in the contest for the services of one Andrew Luck.

Per Irsay:

"Guys like that come along so rarely," Irsay said of Luck, considered by many a can't-miss NFL quarterback. "Even if that means that guy sits for three or four years, you'd certainly think about taking him."

Translates to: If I have the chance to draft Luck, imma be drafting me some Luck.
