I wish Durham would have a beer week as opposed to the World Beer Fest we have. That thing has basically just become a frat party where you pay to get in and slam as much beer as you can. Almost nobody sends their coolest beers nor anyone from the brewery who knows anything because people are just looking to "sample" as much as they can, as fast as they can.

Off in the corner, they do have a tent with some discussions and I was invited to be a part of a food and beer pairing panel, but it seems way less cool in general than others I've heard about in other cities.

The beer and cheese pairing was awesome. Overly crowded and maybe it thinned out because of it. Whatever the reason, there was some great cheese/meats/beers to be had. Fathead's sent their award winning head hunter IPA as well as a seasonal chocolate pumpkin stout that was outstanding.

Bell's had 4 bottles of which I only sampled the Oarsmen Ale as I've seen it many times but never bought it. It was great and will be in my next beer cart when I go beer shopping.

Hoppin' Frog's Boris the Crusher Oatmeal stout was as thick and heady as I remember.

A really awesome pumpkin creve that was just like cheesecake was on sample. I had multiples.

I also tried the Victory Imperial Stout which was pretty heavy. Really tasty.

For only having seven breweries, there was plenty to choose from.

One guy from Utah brought an earl grey tea rined cheese. Don't remember the style but it was incredible. Especially when paired with the Victory Pale Ale, a suggestion from one of the Conway's, a founder of Great Lakes.

The meats were from Utah as well. I don't remember the name of the place, I've got all the flyers at home in my bag, but he did really well. Especially with his spicy somethingorother.

Speaking of spicy, there was this one cheese that was a smoky, spicy goat cheese that they guy paired with a paw paw. Pretty cool.

I knew I should have brung my notepad and pen.

Tonight is Ales on Rails and I can't wait...

So the Ales on Rails wasn't quite as much drinking as the Cheese event. And we were in coach, which meant were were knee to knee with a couple strangers who we had no choice to make friends with. Nice late 30s couple. She's a partner in an engineering firm and he's a consultant working for the local NASA branch. Which led me to wonder why they didn't buy the 80 buck seats since they could clearly afford it. Maybe they bought late. He was gregarious and kept after the servers to hand him the bottle. After we'd sample all 6, it was a free for all with folks raiding the coolers and bringing back bottles to their cars/seats.

The Ayinger seemed to be the crowd favorite as many of the bottles disappeared rather quickly. Followed by the Victory Golden Monkey. One of the brewers from Victory came by and we asked what his most popular was, HopDevil was first followed by the GM. He also said he makes a batch of around 200 kegs of an Octoberfest for a local chain (Winking Lizard). That's a sizable order.

I'm not a barley wine fan so I only had a couple ounces of the Brooklyn Monster.

The Stouts were awesome but I love them.

tonight it's BrewZilla and man oh man, this will be a treat.
