Puddy
Every league I've ever played in has been head-to-head and only one matchup per week. Over time I've heard of leagues using double headers. I was reading a column by Matthew Berry today and he's in a league with this rule: It's a 10-team league, and two sets of wins are awarded every week. The five teams that win their head-to-head matchup get a win, and the top five highest-scoring teams also get a win. Helps mitigate those weeks when you have the third-highest score but were playing one of the two highest-scoring teams. Or, conversely, penalizes those who squeak by with a less-than-stellar week. I thought it was a pretty cool idea and wondered if anyone else has a league like this. Levels the playing field a bit. It would definitely hurt me in one league this year where I'm 5-1 because of matchups (my all-play record is 35-31) but there have been plenty of weeks over time where I'd lose to the only team who could beat me that week. Do you prefer these types of leagues that reduces the importance of the 'match-up'?

So do the five lowest scoring teams receive a loss?. That is an intersting concept. My local is a 10-team league and we were talking about adding double headers next year. Especially since the season before last when the second lowest scoring team took the championship. We have a league trophy that passes to the current champion. The championship team gets it name on the trophy each year and for that year I added an asterisk next to winners name. Didn't go over to well with that years champ but everyone else in the league loved it. Hopefully a system like that would take care of that kind of anomaly. wolfer
Sounds like a victory point system but rewards 5 teams equally. As the high score of the week I'm not sure I'd be happy with seeing 5th highest score also get a point. As for my leagues, A VP point system has been discussed and shot down every time. At the end of the day everyone prefers the trash talk and rivalries pure H2H gives you. I can only speak of locals here, I'm not sure how people feel about playing FF against strangers, it could change your view on this in a hurry. On MFL we've tracked VP in the past but honestly there is rarely ever a significant change in the standings.
alchico
Just ran the numbers in my 8 team local where I lead the league in scoring but am tied for last place. With the VP thingie I would be in 3rd. pretty comfortably.

Not sure I like it yet but am interested in hearing opinions.

I'd like to see something along the lines of a scaled system. 1 pt for a win and then additional pts based on order of points for the week that awards more points for high score; maybe 1 pt for high score, .9 for for second, .8 for third, etc. You could weight that differently, would have to think more about that. archiebonker
We went with some double headers this season in our 16 team league. I wanted everyone to be able to play each other once and with 4 Divisions, have all teams to play each division team twice. ( so we have 5 double headers and none of them are on bye weeks) Works well.
