Given that there are a lot more touchbacks on kickoffs and the resulting poorer field position to start games for teams receiving kicks, if you are a HC for a team that has a strong D and/or are playing a team with a weak O, why wouldn't you chose to kickoff to start a game, with the intention of improving your starting field position when you get the ball back via a punt and the return? Scores have clealry dropped over the past two weeks as Ds have caught up with the Os after the reduced prep time due to the shortened preseason. 16 of the 26 teams playing last week scored 20 points or less - including 4 teams that scored 0 TDs and 7 teams that scored only 1 TD. In week 6, 16 of the 26 teams playing scored 20 points or less - with 2 teams with 0 TDs and 3 teams that scored only 1 TD. That's way down from the early part of the season, and even into week 5, where only 7 of the 26 teams playing scored 20 pts or less - with 1 team scoring 0 TDs and only 1 teams scoring only 1 TD. With less scoring going on, it seems to me that puts a much greater premium on field position. That would seem to favor a lot of teams putting their D on the field first to try to enhance their field position throughout that half. Thoughts?
