Okung hurts pectoral on “unnecessary” play by Trent Cole

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 2, 2011, 9:13 AM EST

Getty ImagesSeahawks left Russell Okung suffered what coach Pete Carroll termed a significant pectoral injury late in Thursday night’s game after a questionable post-whistle move by Eagles defensive end Trent Cole.

The play came with 1:57 left in the game. I watched it again on NFL.com’s Game Rewind and Cole’s takedown should get some attention from the league.

Okung is blocking Cole legally to the whistle even though the run is away from them. (The best view we can find online is here. It’s not ideal.)

Cole gets upset after the whistle is blown and continues to grab at Okung’s arm. He hip tosses Okung to the ground like a wrestler. It sounds like Okung may be out for the year.

“I didn’t see the play where they threw him down, but he got hurt,” Carroll said after the game via the Tacoma News Tribune. “He has a pec injury that doesn’t look good right now. From what I heard, it was really an unnecessary play that didn’t have to happen. You guys will probably see that.”

At the very least, it was worth an unnecessary roughness penalty. Mike Sando of ESPN.com says that the Seahawks thought it was a cheap shot.

Okung said he felt something pop. He had to hold his arm up after the game while others cut off his uniform around the injury.

this post really belongs in the IDP forum, however considering the Suh thread it seemed to fit.

if Okung is hurt, Cole better get >2 games.

I don't see why any needlessly violent acts on the part of any player should go unpunished.

I haven't seen the play, but sure, if it's bad, go ahead and suspend him. Fine with me.

That said, I really think the NFL needs a points system. Like driving. They need to lay off calling aggressive hits as PF and just examine these hits post game in film, so they can really determine if the hit was just hard or really dirty. Of course, if someone pulls something obvious after a play or what not and the ref sees it, go ahead and flag it then and check the film to assign points.

Then when the points add up, suspend, fine, both, what-have-you. It should be relatively simple if they do it that way.

And you shouldn't have to actually injure a guy to get busted. The idea is to curb the behavior before someone gets hurt.

I was listening to this game on sirius and the announcers said right before the half that these 2 were going at it pretty good and had some extra curicular pushing and shoving going on after the whistle. Sounds like they went at it pretty good all game . Its a shame if he is lost for the year on a blow after the bell . cant really judge until we see the play though

It was bush league.

And you may want to edit the team name in your sig

You're kidding, right? Do you know how many players would be suspended if everyone who continued pushing and shoving after the whistle were reprimanded? I would guess most teams wouldn't be able to field a team. Lemme guess...its OK until someone is injured as a result.

And no, my sigline will be perfect yet again in about five weeks  In fact, its perfect now, as I am sure the guy who said it expected the team in question to be 11-0.

It's not fair to pick on him, he wears blue goggles with stars on the lenses

EDIT: pushing and shoving is different from and arm bar hip toss. I don't think he should be suspended but back in the day I'd imagine a chop block would be in his future

....if Suh wanted to hurt the guys' arm he obviously could have...(he's 300 lbs.+)...a frustrated Cole clearly hip-whipped Okung with intent to harm -AND DID! -that's the difference. Suh has a reputation that precedes him and it clearly has hurt him, but if you take the emotion out of it, Coles penance has to be more severe.

Russell Okung out for season with torn pectoral

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 2, 2011, 6:57 PM EST

Getty ImagesSeattle left tackle Russell Okung suffered an injury when he took a shot from Philadelphia defensive end Trent Cole on Thursday night that the Seahawks thought was a cheap shot.

The league office will determine whether it’s a costly shot for Cole, but it was definitely a costly shot for Okung.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Okung tore his pectoral muscle, a serious injury that will require six months of rehabilitation. Obviously, Okung is done for the season, and with a six-month time frame, Okung just has to hope rehab goes according to schedule so that he’s 100 percent when training camp starts next year.

Okung is the Seahawks’ third starting offensive lineman to be lost for the season, joining right tackle James Carpenter and right guard John Moffitt.

The sixth overall pick of last year’s NFL draft, Okung has started every game he’s played. But he missed six games last season and will now miss the final four games this season.

 at that entire post.

Suh stomping on a defenseless playerlaying on his back after the whistle was very bad. b-b-b-b-ut he didnt WANT to try and hurt him.

"hip-whipped with intent to harm"? You really think that was an "intent to harm"? Besides the fact that they were still engaged and Okung was still blocking him . . .

It sucks that he was hurt, Cole should get a stiff fine, and maybe a stern talking to by Goodell. But in no way shape or form should that be a suspension.

Im surprised how many people are brushing this play off. Cole was getting his ass handed to him on the field so he hip tosses Okung causing him to be out for 6 months. What would you rather receive , a stomp on the ground or be unexpectedly flipped during a play causing your chest muscle to rip to shreds

lol so suh stomping a guy like a fairy is worse than this guy tossing a 300 pound man by ripping his pectoral muscle from his burritoing chest.

you guys are diluted

its the exact same display of frustration, only there was LESS THAN 2 MINUTES IN THE GAME, and HE burritoING TOSSED A LINEMAN

you dont see that? the game was basically over and he ended a guys season because he was mad. the intent is there, he tossed him. what else do you want?

man, look at all this after-the-whistle with intent-to-injure (punches, kicks) activity....my mind must be going blank, as I can't remember all these guys being suspended

Should Cole have been flagged? yep. Should he be fined? maybe. Will he be the subject of retribution the next time they play Seattle? probably. Is it in the same neighborhood as to what Suh did? not even close.
