3 way Tie-Breaker

So three teams finish with identical 6-7 records. Two spots left in the playoffs. Our league tie-breaker is head-to head. Team A had beaten Team C twice, 1-1 vs Team B and Team B also split with Team C. Records in those games would be:

Team A- 3-1

Team B- 2-2

Team C- 1-3

Based on this Teams A and B would be in.

Or.....would we do this.

Since Team A beat Team C twice they are ahead of them. Team B was 1-1 with Team C but Team C held the tie-breaker based on points for/against. (the next tiebreaker) Team B was 1-1 with Team A but they hold the tiebreaker. So in essence yo have a circle. The next tiebreaker is total points. So based on that Team C would be 1st, Team B 2nd and Team A out..

Whatcha think?.....

What is the exact verbiage of your rules?

I personally think that if there is nothing in the rules that requires a sweep, and it's purely based on "best H2H" record with no mention of how 3 teams are handled, then you simply go with the team with the best H2H record (Team A).

However, if you are trying to mirror NFL rules, then for 3 teams a clean sweep would still be required just the same as 2, and as some have argued before, may be the fairest way to settle it it with it being circular like that, to move on to the next tie-breaker.

But I think it's far too late to be interpreting rules differently than how you have them written. You could definitely consider adding that a sweep is required next year to win that tie-breaker, but assuming your rules don't address that, I think you have to go with the team with the best H2H record for the first playoff spot.

As per the second playoff spot, you simply apply the same tie-breaker, but just with 2 teams.

Another example of why h2h etc. is not a good tiebreaker in FF, and that total points is a more relevant measure for a team's performance over the course of the season.

Lacking any clarification on if a head to head sweep is needed, and not knowing what, if any, additional tiebreakers you have, I would say that Team A makes it for best overall head to head record and you have to flip a coin for the second spot as team B and C split.

If you have additional layers of tiebreak rules, post them here.

Tie Breaker System(regular season) (teams with identical records):

1. Head to Head (wins then point spreads).

2. Total Points For (amount scored over year).

3. Coin Flip.

Tie Breaker System (playoffs)

1. Compare highest scoring player @ each position and award 1 point for highest

2. Starter team td's

3. Starter team total yards

4. Coin flip

From our "league rules" section. Thanks...

Given nothing that says a sweep is needed, then I think what I posted above applies and Team a is the first team in as they have the best head to head record.

For the second playoff spot, I guess it depends on what "spreads" means. I take that to mean point differential, so whichever of Team B and C scored more points in their 2 matchups would get the 2nd playoff spot. If they happened to score the same total points in those 2 matchups, then you'd go to total points.

Based on the above - in the 3-way tie, team A gets the 1st playoff spot. Now that the 1st spot is decided, you start the process over to determine which of B & C get the last spot ... since they split their games (the games involving team A no longer matter) you have to go to your rule "1a" (poor wording on the rules IMO, you have 2 tie-break mechanisms sort of defined under 1 "rule") which means the team (of B and C) with the best "point spread" differential in the games played between B & C gets the playoff spot. If you still have a tie, you move on to your rule #2, and whichever of B & C has the most total points scored for the entire season gets into the playoffs.

E2A - BC beat me to it, looks like he and I are saying the same thing.

We had teh same situation in our league. The way I handle that is, the first tiebreaker is H2H, but when more than 2 teams are involved, this only applies if one team beat every team involved. If that is not the case, it goes to points. EX:we had a 3 team tie, one team was 2-0 adn 1-0 against the other teams so he was in. After that it was between the other 2 teams and it was H2H. If every team involved in teh tiebreaker has atleast 1 loss to any other team involved, it should go to points.

I had the same issue in my league years ago and since the the major tie breakers were of no use since the tie was between 3 teams instead of 2, I made all the tied teams spin the dreidel instead of flip a coin since a coin is only 2-sided. I still have the entire event on video. It was one of the most memorable events in the league's history.
