sundaynfl
This does suck, but I am surprised it doesn't happen even more than it does... You put 60 to 80K people into a small area fights are bound to break out... especially when you add alcohol and rivalries! As a long time Broncos season ticket holder I have seen plenty of things happen in the stands and outside the park.
CaptainHook
A fight can be prevented by walking away. I've seen my share of fights in the stands. I've gone to several away games to watch my Colts. I have yet to see a fight where both parties weren't acting like idiots. I have a hard time believing that all he said to the Chiefs fans was that their comments were "disrespectful". That does not trigger a fight. i_am_the_swammi
I thought it was odd that this fight happened in the jets home stadium....lemme get this straight, a handful of visiting Chiefs fans, amongst 80,000 jets fans, get loud, yell something derogatory about 9/11, and they are the ones delivering the beating? I am surprised they were able to walk out of the place under their own power. Something wierd about that one.
matt770
I went on a Phillies fan outing with my inlaws this past summer...3 busloads of people all in Phillies gear, unlimited beer on the bus ride, then on a boat that cruised from Manhattan up the East River and eventually docked at the marina by Citi Field...we're talking a full day of getting absolutely annihilated on free beer, then walking into a hostile stadium like an invading army. We sat in the outfield and I would swear that 2/3 of the cops assigned to the game were in our section. It started with obscene (and some pretty funny) chants which a few of the Mets fans didn't appreciate and there were verbal confrontations all game long. Several ejections, lots of threats but happily no physical violence. It's really asinine, the level to which some people take it, insulting not just the team but the city and everyone in it, in the most creative and obscene manner possible. Just uncalled for and completely pointless, and alcohol is the key trigger.
tazinib1
I wish I was there. No way in hell those Chief dicks would have walked out. I don't mind going to jail to defend my country.

Hugh 0ne
I read that in the NY Post yesterday and was going to post it but forgot. What surprised me more than anything was the comments made about 9/11. I don't care how drunk you are, what kind of American thinks New Yorkers deserved what happened on 9/11? That's some pretty f*cked up sh*t right there. Edited December 15, 2011 by Hugh 0ne

Ursa Majoris
There's a long way to go before they reach the soccer standards of the 70s and 80s but fan segregation is a-comin' soon. I would bet Rollerball becomes a sport before that would happen. Impossible to control the tickets when profits are to be made.
Ursa Majoris
None of this bullsh*t happens in the stadium, it's all in the parking lots, how do you segregate that? In England, they used to corral the away fans off the train, march them to the away section of the stadium under police escort, hold them there until after the game and the home fans had dispersed, march them back to the trains and send them on their way. Not very practical here but it can be done. Mind you, this was in the days of mass riots at most games.

stevegrab
I used to have season tickets for the Browns game and saw plenty of crazy Athena happening over the years. Alcohol, testosterone, young idiots, cause this stuff to happen. I've seen people thumped outside the stadium who were not doing anything, so I'm not sure I buy Hook's "just walk away", that doesn't with irrational drunks. I've told a coworker who is a Steeler fan and is taking his son to the PIT-CLE game to watch out. Don't wear gear, or be prepared to cover it up (with a jacket) on the way out if the game gets ugly. The majority of fans are ok, and may talk Athena or taunt the opponents, but all it takes is a few drunk Brooklyn Deckers to attack somebody and beat them senseless. (And that usually happens otuside the stadium where there is less security, and less chance that some other fans intervene.
CaptainHook
I was in KC for a Colts/Chiefs playoff game. As we were leaving, a drunk guy started talking Athena. The worst thing you can do in that situation is start talking back. You're outnumbered 100:1. He threw a beer that hit me in the back. Just kept walking with a smile on my face. The fact the Colts punked them in their own house was all the satisfaction I needed. There is no confrontation if you don't engage with them. I also don't stand up and be obnoxious when my team does something good at a road game either. That always pisses off the locals. But I've worn Colts gear to Tennessee, Cincinnati, KC, Chicago, Miami, and a Super Bowl and never had an issue. Chavez
Impossible to control the tickets when profits are to be made. The NFL could sell to season ticket holders, and sell the remaining tickets via auction. It would give some control over the tickets by eliminating a large chunk of the secondary market

However the fact that the dude started talking Athena and threw a bear at you already indicates to me the guy was creating a confrontation which was unprovoked. So I could see him or his buds noticing you are smiling and say "Taylor Swift's ding dong you smiling at dude, you want your ass kicked?" or just pummeling you without noticing that. Sure it doesn't happen often, but not reacting is no gaurantee that you won't get attacked. We're talking about alcohol and testosterone fueled idiots afterall. I've seen it happen in Cleveland, so I'm sure it happens elsewhere. (I'm sure many guys would have reacted to the talking, and certainly the beer tossing, and then it turns into a fight.)
