Fan violence is not new but this one is disgusting

This stuff happens more than you may think. The year that the Saints went to Chicago and lost in the play offs the Bears fans were ripping the Saints fans about how we deserved what we got with Katrina.

I have been to a lot of Saints games and am always amazed at how little of this I see in the dome. I can remember 2 fights that I saw in all the games I went to. One was this seasons home opener against the Bears. No idea who started it but both the participants were quickly escorted to their evening accommodations in central lock up. The other was several years ago on the ramp on the way out after the Saints put a whooping on the Falcons. A Falcon fan was standing there on the ramp with his shirt off trying to pick a fight with any Saints fan that would have it. All the while his friends were begging him to just leave. Finally he pushed the wrong Saints fan and was promptly knocked out cold. We stayed around to make sure the guy wasn't dead and when the cops arrived to ask what happened and who caused it his friends told the cops he was drunk and got what he had coming to him.

It's less about engaging, and more about idiocy, I'd say - we went to Cinci back in '05 and we were jawing back and forth with the guys in front of us all game, and it was cool - everyone had a good time, we shook hands and smiled when we left.

Of course, the jawing was about the respective teams and the game on the field, not so much about each other's questionable parentage and/or sexual proclivities - "The Packer suck!" "Yeah, we pretty much do... hey, nice stadium, but I couldn't find the place where you keep your Super Bowl trophies."

I hear you, and not talking Athena back or reacting will usually prevent escalation. However the fact that the dude started talking Athena and threw a bear at you already indicates to me the guy was creating a confrontation which was unprovoked.

That's crossing the line. I mean, really, who brings a bear to a fist fight?
