NFL tiebreakers

Was listening to local radio here in cincy, and everyone is saying the bengals must win one more game than the jets to make the playoffs (assuming that the titans, raiders, chargers do not come into play). So basically bengals need to go 2-0 and jets 1-1 in their final 2 games. So in doing my own research (and grasping at anything) I do not think this is true. If they both win out, I can see a scenario in which the bengals can make it. Am I Missing something??

Bengals remaining schedule : Arz and Balt

Jets remaining schedule: NyG and Mia

Tie breakers from nfl.com

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM OR AMONG DIVISION WINNERS

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.

2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Two Clubs

1. Head-to-head, if applicable.

2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.

4. Strength of victory.

5. Strength of schedule.

6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.

7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.

8. Best net points in conference games.

9. Best net points in all games.

10. Best net touchdowns in all games.

11. Coin toss.

So......Here is my tiebreaker:

1. Have not played

2. Both are 6-5...if they both win out they will both be 7-5

3. Jets are 3-2 and the Bengals are 2-2. The only common opponent left is cincy vs balt. so if they bengals win this they will be 3-2 as well.

4. This is where Im unsure. If it is on they year, the Jets total pts are 346-315 (+31). The bengals are 305-283 (+22).

So I guess what Im looking for is if my logic is correct (especially #4) and if so, should I call marvin and tell him to score as many points as possible?? I remember GB doing this several years ago. Do I think the Bengals are going to win the Superbowl, no. But I would love Dalton to get some playoff time and who knows, we could catch pit or balt 1st round and weve seen them both twice.

I'd much rather see Cinci than NYJ any day. That train has left the station, but we're subjugated by how awesome they will be every pre-season.

Another thing: hey fireman/lawyer guy: go away! Sick of seeing you're bald head on every week's Jet's highlights.

Definition: A part of the NFL's tiebreaking procedure, strength of victory is figured by calculating the combined winning percentage of the opponents a team has beaten

So you would have to calculate the Winning % of each team the teams have beaten.

And you'd have to do that at the END of the season, or take into account the possible outcomes of remaining games if trying to do it now.

I'm not sure if this tool includes all the tie breakers or not, but it is pretty interesting for figuring out what games impact others and who goes to the playoffs.

Not going to spend the time adding them up, but a quick scan of both teams schedules reveals the only victory against a team that currently has a winning record was the Jets beating Dallas wk 1. Should they both win the last two and it actually goes to strength of victory tiebreaker the Bengals beating Baltimore wk 17 could be a huge swing.

EDIT TO ADD: If the Jets beat NYG then lose to MIA, and the Bengals lose to AZ but beat BAL, that's 1-1 for both, but gives the Bengals the edge on conference record. Not the most likely of scenarios, but possible.
